The day included several other presenters. These included: Mike Botkin (LK '98), Kitsap Community Resources; Walter Washington, Kitsap County Auditor; Michelle Hansen (LK '05), Suquamish Tribal Counsel; and Sharon Schrader, former Kitsap County Treasurer. Sharon facilitated a panel discussion with elected officials. The panel included: Kitsap County Commissioner, Josh Brown ; Bremerton Mayor, Patty Lent; Port Orchard Mayor, Lary Coppola; and Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue Commissioner, Mick McKinley (LK '95). Sharon also moderated a debate between Kitsap County Prosecuting Attorney candidates, Russ Hauge and Bruce Danielson, under the rules of the League of Women Voters.

A highlight of the day was "Lunch with the Electeds". Over 17 elected officials participated in roundtable lunch discussion groups with the class. Members of the class had many opportunities for one-on-one conversations with state, city and county officials.

Description:  In organizations and communities we are often expected to work together to achieve shared objectives. While at times we experience the full benefits of working collaboratively, too often we are frustrated in our ability to pursue a mutual purpose. This seminar is designed to provide work teams skills and strategies to function more effectively. Combining organizational development theory, adult learning theory and conflict resolution theory, this workshop presents strategies that will enhance team performance and improve relationships. Participants will:

  • Learn a framework for understanding and assessing group development;
  • Explore the role of leadership during different phases of group development;
  • Gain skills for effective communication;
  • Explore effective decision making and how it relates to leadership;
  • Develop shared expectations, core values and shared vision.
