Recruiting for the Class of 2011 is in full swing. The mission of Leadership Kitsap is to promote informed and committed civic volunteerism, creating a community with a diverse network of effective leaders educated in public policy issues and committed to serving as stewards. | Economic Challenge Day * December 11

For the second year in a row, Leadership Kitsap's Economics Challenge day took place at one of Kitsap County's few manufacturing facilities, Watson Furniture Group in Poulsbo. Former Bremerton Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Sylvia Klatman, presented the class with the latest demographic statistics of the county. Leadership Kitsap graduate and current Executive Director of PSNS & IMF, Rick Tift, was able to expound on the importance and significance of the military influence to economic development in the Puget Sound region. Russell Steele, CEO of Port Madison Enterprises (PME); and Leonard Forsman, Chairman of the Suquamish Tribe; gave an overview of what new business ventures PME is involved in which has resulted in stimulating new jobs. After a tour of the Watson Furniture factory, the class heard from various business leaders which included: Jim Nall, CEO of Paladin Data Systems; Carole Dawson, CEO of Bremerton Bottling Co.; Bill Stewart, Executive Director of Kitsap Economic Development Alliance; and Patricia Graf-Hoke, Executive Director of Kitsap Peninsula Visitor & Convention Bureau. The overall feeling from these various CEOs is that economic development has slowed, however they are finding ways to endure the current economic climate. Ed Stern, Poulsbo City Councilman, wrapped up the day by challenging the class to think about the pros and cons of economic development in Kitsap County. Would increased ferry traffic and building new bridges benefit or be a detriment to the county's economic health? We need to plan carefully for Kitsap County's future generations. |
| Healthy Community Day * January 8
Sponsored by Harrison Medical Center & KPS Health Plans Kitsap County Health Director, Dr. Scott Lindquist, gave a straightforward report of the current, critical health issues in Kitsap County. The class learned that depression and its side-effects are the primary healthcare concerns in the county. Before lunch, class members participated in four round table discussions of their choice. Their options were: Children (birth - five), Teen Suicide, Volunteer Opportunities, Mental Health, Healthcare for the Underserved, Homeless Coalition, and Aging & Long Term Care. After a scrumptious lunch, complements of Harrison Medical Center, the class watched a thought-provoking documentary examining national healthcare issues and investigating what makes people sick in the first place. The afternoon revolved around a challenge day activity that ultimately broadened the class member's knowledge on various key health care and social service agencies available in Kitsap County. The participating agencies were; Kitsap Community Resources, Kitsap County Health District, Kitsap Mental Health, Hospice of Kitsap County, Peninsula Community Health Services, Tribal Human Services Department, Aids Foundation, Kitsap Homeless Coalition, Kitsap Aging & Long Term Care, and Holly Ridge Center. The class was given scenarios of actual family cases in Kitsap County and used the various agencies to find solutions. |

State Government Day Trip to Olympia * February 19 Sponsored by Congressman Norm Dicks
Secretary of Transportation, Paula Hammond, kicked the morning off for the class in Olympia. Hammond was able to give the class an overview of the challenges in her department especially in regards to funding. During a meeting with Secretary of State Sam Reed, the class learned the various responsibilities of his position. Most notably they include: overseeing all state and local elections, custodian of the state seal, and official state historian. Before class members engaged in lunch they were able to visit the Governor's conference room. The governor was unavailable to meet with the class but participants were fortunate to meet with Marty Loesch, Director of External Affairs and Senior Counsel to the governor. Mr. Loesch gave a candid overview of what the current environment is like in Olympia during this legislative session. Class members had lunch with the majority of legislators from the 23rd, 26th, and 35th Districts. Legislators talked about some of the hot topics currently being discussed in the legislature as well as what it means to lead during these times. Legislators who attended lunch with the class were: Rep. Sherry Appleton, Rep. Jan Angel, Rep. Fred Finn, Rep. Christine Rolfes, Rep. Kathy Haigh, Rep. Larry Seaquist, and Senator Derek Kilmer. The day wrapped up by visiting the Hall of Justice. Justice Mary Fairhurst gave an engaging overview of the process of higher courts in Washington State and then took the class on a "behind the scenes" tour of the Hall of Justice.

Class of 2010 * Project Update 9/11 Memorial Project Team 3 is partnering with Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue (CKF&R), who is receiving a piece of steel from the World Trade Center for use as an artifact memorial sculpture. The team is working with local 5th grade classes (born in 2001) to create ceramic tiles depicting what freedom and honor mean to them. The tiles will be incorporated into the artwork with the memorial piece of steel.
Newberry Hill Heritage Park Team 1 ispartnering with the Kitsap County Parks Department to create directional and interpretative signs for 250 acres of the Newberry Hill Heritage Park. The team has engaged the shop students at the local high school to help build and install the signs. They will also be working with the Stewardship Group and local community volunteers on the park project.
Women's Shelter Living Room - Hope for the Homeless Team 4 has partnered with St. Vincent de Paul to furnish the common living area in the new Birkenfeld Stella Maris House, a shelter for homeless women and children that is opening in Bremerton in early 2010. The shelter will house up to 17 women and children for up to 30 days, providing them with stable housing and connecting them with resources to assist with the attainment of permanent housing, education, job training, child care, and employment.
Fun Run/Walk for the Homeless Team 2 will host a Fun Run/Walk and Resource Fair on April 24, 2010 at the Poulsbo Waterfront Park to benefit homeless and needy teens in Kitsap County. Team WIOS (Walk in Others Shoes) has partnered with Kitsap Continuum of Care Coalition, local School Districts and the organizations represented by the Coalition. The entry "fee" for the Fun Run/Walk will be a donation of hygiene items. These items will be packaged, boxed and provided to the coalition for distribution.

Alumni Leadership Award Nominations Now Being Accepted!
LKAA is currently accepting nominations for the 2010 Outstanding Alumni Leadership Award. This annual award recognizes an alumnus who best represents the principles of Leadership Kitsap in the community. Nominations will be accepted until May 7, 2010. Your Annual LKAA Dues are Due!
The legacy of Leadership Kitsap is the alumni.
LKAA works hard throughout the year to plan social events, build the scholarship fund, and to keep the tradition and legacy of the program strong. The Leadership Kitsap Foundation Board of Directors relies on alumni to recruit for new class members, participate in Challenge Days, and to mentor current class members. Please support the alumni association by paying your $25 annual dues.
