ILA Posts Comment On Potential Labor Action
On Friday, August 31, the ILA posted comments on its web site about the current status of negotiations with the USMX. In that statement, the ILA membership voiced its strong support for their President, Harold Daggett, along with the union's hopes that a strike can be avoided on October 1, but clearly indicating that members are making preparations for a strike if the USMX holds to its last position of "gutting wages and benefits". The union has formally requested that the USMX provide them with their "best and final offer" so that ILA delegates may convene and vote on the proposal.
In the posted statement, Daggett praised the resolve of his members across the US and also indicated that union workers around the US and the world had pledged their solidarity with the ILA. The ILA is the largest union of maritime workers in North America, representing upwards of 65,000 longshoremen on the Atlantic and Gulf Costs, Great Lakes, major US rivers, Puerto Rico and Eastern Canada.
