Files Safeguard Petition

On August 24, the Brazilian Textile and Apparel Industry Association (ABIT) announced it had filed a safeguard petition covering 60 different clothing products. This group of products accounts for 82% of Brazil's apparel imports from suppliers and regions around the world. It does appear, however, that China is the main target of the action. The Association favors the establishment of quotas on apparel imports or the imposition of additional tariffs as the result of the 240% increase in apparel imports from 2007 to 2011.

The Brazilian Association of Textile Retailers has expressed opposition to this process.

There is no exact time by which the Brazilian government will make a decision regarding the petition.
