Natural Bowel Care Program: Phytic acid and flax

Flax NBCP Logo

Phytic acid or phytates are a phosphorus containing compound, found in the outer husk of cereal grains. Phytates bind with specific minerals and can prevent the absorption of these nutrients in the body.

Foods high in phytates, bran in particular, may contribute to nutrient deficiencies. Mineral absorption of iron and zinc, and to a lesser extend calcium and magnesium, may be effected by the phytate content.

Flax on the other hand, is an ideal choice. Phytic acid levels in mg per 100 grams of dry weight of 100% wheat bran cereal is 3,290 mg. Compared to 1 Tbsp of ground flax with 64-120 mg of phytic acid. Flax therefore would have very little, if any effect on the absorption of iron or other important minerals.

Flax flower

Would you like

to have beautiful flax flowers in your backyard this summer?

Plant whole flax seeds in moist firm soil. The seeds should be planted about 2.5 to 4.0 cm deep and 15 to 20 cm apart.

Seeds will grow best when planted in spring or early summer. The plant will thrive on full sun exposure with frequent watering, to keep the soil moist.

To order your free package of flax seeds email sales@valleyflaxflour.com with your name and mailing address. In the subject line please type "seeds."
