ACTIVE 6

A partnership between the Missoula Family YMCA, The University of Montana and Community Medical Center and other generous donors, is providing a unique opportunity for all 6th graders in Missoula County.  ACTIVE 6 offers every 6th grader a YMCA membership for one year, giving them access to the pool, the climbing wall, the youth center, and a variety of YMCA activities.  Starting October 5 structured activities will be offered every Tuesdays and Thursdays.  UM Health & Human Performance students will be volunteering during those activities to offer the needed mentoring to encourage healthy, active lifestyles paired with the YMCA core values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.  For more informationcontact Keri McHugh at 532-6281 or kmchugh@ymcamissoula.org

The Missoula YMCA's Active 6 program is a valiant attempt to level the playing field for all sixth graders in Missoula County.  Public health has known for years that there are social determinants of health with socioeconomic (SES) levels being one of the most important.  Plainly stated, in the U.S. poorer adults and children are more likely to have poorer health.  A Canadian study published in 2006 looked at what factors influence physical activity and differences between high-and low-SES youth.
