Spring Cleaning From The Inside Out
Staci Smith
 By Staci Smith FL142

Hello Friends!  My name is Staci Smith and I am a personal chef and Holistic nutrition coach!  Ken has so kindly asked me to talk to you about Health and nutrition periodically here in Summit News.  Since it is April, my favorite time of year, I want to talk a little bit about Spring Cleaning!  Spring cleaning of the body that is!  In my experience, during the winter months we tend to eat heavier diets and more "comfort" type foods, which are not always the healthiest choices!   So I like to have my clients start the spring season with a good juice fast or water fast for a few days, followed by good clean organic foods (nothing packaged, canned or frozen).  When I say Juice fast, I am referring to freshly juiced vegetables.  Try carrot, ginger, beets, spinach, celery, cucumber etc..  If you don't have a juicer you can go to whole foods or your closest juice bar!   Processed, fatty, salty and sugary foods tend to slow us down, make us feel sluggish and overall less motivated.  By cleaning out and starting fresh you will have an abundance of energy and clarity, and you will have more motivation to actually want to go for a jog or hit the gym!  You all know that "healthy" feeling I am referring to!

I realize that this all may sound like a nice idea for some of you, but not really something you are willing to try..... Am I right?   Some of you may need a little push.  So for those of you who need a little wake-up call I would like you to go to Blockbuster and rent  "Food Inc.".  I am all about prevention when it comes to health and wellness.  I eat and feed my family the way I do because I know that obesity, diabetes, cancer and heart disease are prevalent in our country and the rates continue to rise.  I also know that with proper diet and exercise, in most cases, disease can be avoided or less severe.   So take the first step and take care of your body!   Please visit our website more information and recipes!  HAPPY SPRING!!

Stacy is opening a cafe on April 10th!  It's called "All In Good Taste" so stop by and visit her for and something awesome and healthy to eat. They are specializing in healthy take home dinners!

Grace Under Pressure - Winning From Within
Ray Blanchard

By Dr. Ray Blanchard (Discovery Trainer)

Almost everyone has had a situation where they thought they were at the end of the rope or in the jaws of failure, and managed to pull out a victory. Some people only did it once or twice, and they might have chalked it up to luck. They felt relieved and swore to never get themselves in those situations again. They perceived it as a threat. Then there are other people who put themselves in high risk situations as a matter of habit, like an addiction. They live off the adrenalin rush that comes from living on the edge. They need the juice of doing the almost impossible to give life meaning. They live from challenge.

Still, there are people who have stared down adversity numerous times but do not see it as threat nor as a need for challenge. They live from vigor, knowing there may be obstacles when they go for their dreams. They see the opportunity in the situation. In the heat of the moment they go to their next level of genius and find solutions to life's real problems.

Threat, Challenge, or Opportunity! We have come from all three positions at different times in life. But on which would you make your life stand? Which allows you to be most focused, most often, and is most sustainable?

To live from threat is to live from fear and intimidation. This will ruin your will and destroy your morale over time. It leads you to live life "playing not to lose". Then you lose. To live from challenge as an ongoing practice is to develop a habit that could lead to emptiness. What happens when there is no challenge? You may be high when in challenge, but the problem with this is that all the other times may be lows. Swinging from highs to lows creates too many mood swings and moments of meaninglessness. Not such a good way to run your life, your company, or anything else.

The other possibility is to operate from "Opportunity". That is to take every situation as it is, to be present-centered, and in the quick of the moment, to look for the opportunity it poses. This requires you to keep discipline of your mind and not letting yourself go to fear and intimidation and generate a vibration that will only bring forth a matching result. You would be focused in the present, and look for ways to turn any issue into creative new possibilities. If you make this a practice, it will become ingrained into your psyche and behaviors, and it will serve you well in the midst of pressure in all walks of life. This is what athletes and other accomplished superstars do on a more regular basis than the average person. They have done it over and over again, until it becomes their modus operandi, which we call mental strength and clear intention. It is the winner's edge, and it comes from within. And with practice.

Operating from opportunity, having faith, and knowing that tomorrow is a new day is the kind of optimism that will always make a way. Here are a few thoughts and tips to live by:

1. Be health conscious and take action to make sure you have balanced energy. This gives you a stable foundation and helps you concentrate and focus in present time.

2.  Keep your emotions in check and have the presence of mind to not go into negative reaction in the situation. By keeping a positive attitude you generate a powerful vibration that attracts positive energies towards you and allows you to be clear on what works.

3. Reframe a troublesome situation and see the glass as half full rather than half empty. This allows you to see possibilities instead of defeatisms, which give you personal power and energy. That is the cure to depression and it gives you light and lifts you up.
4. Practice gratitude. Live in love rather than fear. Look at each moment as a privilege and be thankful for being alive and in a position to have such opportunities to grow and bring out the best of what you have to offer. In this, you find your true self. Look for the good in people and the situation rather than the disappointments and regrets, which keeps you going forward rather than backwards.

5. Build a solid foundation for your life around a selfless purpose, or something that inspires you and elevates your passion. Always play a game larger than just for yourself, so you have a greater reason for performing at a higher level. It makes life more meaningful and crystallizes your dedication. Be a positive maniac on a mission. It makes you a forced in nature, and it is the "true joy of life". It makes you do the extraordinary and the miraculous.

6. Always pay attention to the things you did well and celebrate your contributions. It is so easy for a few missteps to cast a shadow of criticism over your accomplishments. There will always be cynics to help you demean yourself if you let them. Don't listen to the detractors. Surround yourself with people who will remind you of the beauty of your accomplishments and the difference you make. Then keep on doing what average people say can't be done. Remember your gift, and know that when you use it, it grows. If you don't use it, you lose it.

My FL154's Legacy
FL154 Project Haiti
FL154 Logo
By Jason Graham FL154

Hello, my name is Jason Graham, FL154, and I was asked to write an article about my FL154 Project Haiti Legacy (to build a medical clinic in Haiti) for the Summit email newsletter.

When I signed up for Summit Basic, I had no idea the wild and amazing journey I was embarking on, far less the lasting legacy my team would leave the people of Haiti, or the lasting legacy the workshop would leave me. To date FL154 has made a difference in the lives of 4,600 people (and counting) in Haiti. As for me, I turned my relationship around, got married, and am living a life of possibility every day. And all it took was attending a 5 day workshop. Kind of crazy amazing huh?

Here's a brief chronicling of our FL154 Legacy (there were a lot of twists and turns in the road):

1.  We teamed up with Vision International Missions for several reasons:
  • It was headed by one of our LP team members Dad, and he was already involved in bringing charity to Haiti
  • We could use their charitable organization 501c status in our fund-raising
2.  We started off with the intention to build a school, but when we heard how far people had to travel to the nearest clinic, we decided to build a clinic.
3.  Sandra Holmes lead our team with our 1st charity dinner fundraiser at China Grill - it was a really grand, up-class event, at which we raised around 10k
4.  We did another at Americas Backyard which was not as successful but fun!

5.  I organized the 3rd one last summer, and with the Help of Alan Feuerman, we had an amazing event, combining networking, dinner, and entertainment. We raised around 4k.
6.  Several FL154 team members travelled to Haiti last year to visit the clinic and learn more about Haiti

When the quake hit this year, our nurse, Nadine, was brought to Port-au-Prince to help. Ken Whiten mobilized a US team and traveled to Haiti to bring relief. They've made 3 trips since the quake, and have seen about 4,000 people. Our Legacy is a part of that.

FL154 never knew what outcome to expect when we busied ourselves planning and raising money for the clinic. I remember I had so many doubts - and I know many of my team members did also. I learned that when I set my vision and am accountable to myself and others, sometimes amazing shit happens. No matter what my conversation was/is about my Legacy, the fact is our work has touched many lives, some in a profound way. Maybe who knows even saved lives? That is our result, and all that was required of any of us, was that we set a vision, create alignment, stand for each other, and keep our word.

So who are you going to enroll today? That person could be part of the next amazing Legacy Project!

Creating A Non-Profit
Monikah OgandoBy Monikah Ogando FL108

There is a great deal of misunderstanding about the benefits of starting a nonprofit. Particularly in times of a poor or rough economy, people think they can start a nonprofit to quickly generate income for a good cause. Or, when people see a strong, unmet need in the community, they often focus only on the singular solution to start a new nonprofit. Here are five key steps you must take when considering starting your nonprofit organization:

1. Get Clear About the Purpose (the Mission) for Your New Organization

Write a basic mission statement for your organization. You'll soon need this mission statement anyway if you plan to incorporate your nonprofit (more about incorporation a little later on). At its essence, the mission statement describes the overall purpose of the organization. It addresses the question "Why does the organization exist?"

2.  Now Think About What Kind of Nonprofit You Want to Start

You can incorporate your nonprofit so it exists as a separate legal organization in order to a) own its own property and its own bank account; b) ensure that the nonprofit can continue on its own (even after you're gone); and c) protect yourself personally from liability from operations of the nonprofit. You incorporate your nonprofit by filing articles of incorporation (or other charter documents) with the appropriate local state office. (An incorporated nonprofit requires a board of directors.)

If you want your nonprofit (and if you think your nonprofit deserves) to be exempt from federal taxes (and maybe some other taxes, too), you should file with the IRS to be a "tax-exempt" organization. (The IRS states that you must be a corporation, community chest, fund, or foundation to receive tax-exempt status. Articles of association may also be used in place of incorporation.) (Probably the most well known type of nonprofit is a the IRS classification of 501©(3), a "charitable nonprofit'.) (Being tax-exempt is not the same as being tax-deductible.)  Depending on the nature of your organization, you may also be granted tax-deductible status from the IRS. Publication 526 lists the types of organizations to which donations are deductible.

So, for example, you could start a nonprofit that is incorporated, tax-exempt and eligible to receive tax deductible donations.

The particular steps you take when starting your nonprofit depend on your plans for your organization, including the nature of its services. They also depend on how the IRS interprets the nature of your organization, including its services.

3. Consider Fiscal Sponsorship to Jump Start Your Organization

In some cases, you might find and work with another nonprofit organization that will act as your fiscal sponsor. A fiscal sponsor might be useful to you if your nonprofit:
  1) Does not have sufficient resources to handle startup costs and fees
  2) Does not have sufficient skills initially to manage your finances
  3) Will address a community need and then no longer need to exist.

4. You Can Do Much of the Work Yourself - But Get Legal Advice and Guidance

You can do much of the work yourself to get incorporated and/or tax-exemption and/or tax-deductibility, but you should have some basic guidance and advice from a lawyer who understands nonprofit matters. For example, in the USA, it's very important how you characterize your plans when filing for incorporation with your state and/or for tax-exemption and/or tax-deductibility with the IRS -- otherwise, your new organization may be deemed a for-profit or you may have to pay federal taxes (among other taxes) on your income. In addition, there are various reports and filings you may have to submit. A nonprofit-knowledgeable lawyer can help you a great deal. Ask other nonprofits for references to good lawyers. Ask a local funder. Call the local bar association.

5. Get Started

If you already know you want a separate legal entity as your nonprofit organization to serve a specific social or charitable function, don't wait. There are millions of people with needs that you can fulfill through your organization, and government/private funders waiting to support you in making that vision come true. The only step to take now is the next one.
