You'll notice that our medical Missions e-newsletter specifically emphasizes the "little m" for medical and the "big M" for missions.

It often is difficult for newcomers or others to understand what that's all about.  Isn't a mission trip taken by medical professionals really just all about providing medical care to those who need it?

The Shawi Tribe: Hope and Opportunity in Peru

The Balsapuerto district of the Amazon Basin, located near the city of Yurimaguas, has one of the highest levels of poverty in Peru.  It's one of the reasons I believe God led me to start working here about 10 years ago.  I had visited a Chayahuita (now called Shawi) village with a team of pastors to do a pastor's conference, and was very impacted by the suffering I saw among the people of this tribe....children with heads covered in sores, stomachs distended by parasites, their unwashed clothes hanging on them in tatters, malnourished, and sad.
