Three Tips for Successful Change |
You've heard it before; change is constant like the morning sunrise. I've found whether change is desired or not, reactions can include skepticism, weariness, excitement, anxiety, anger and question, "Why is this happening to me." The most important part of change is what's going on in your mind about the change.
Tip #1 Manage your frame of mind about the change
Assess how you are seeing the change. What are the benefits and detriments to you and to others around you. How much energy are you willing to expend on worry or enthusiasm about the change?
Elizabeth Kubler-Ross is credited for identifying the predictable emotional cycles associated with change.
Tip #2 Acknowledge and embrace the natural cycle of change
Immobilization - confusion or fear about the change
Denial - defending and unacceptable reality
Anger - effort to regain control
Bargaining - trying to minimize the impact
Depression - frustration, feeling of loss
Experimentation - beginning to try new ways
Acceptance - Being OK with the change
Tip #3 Develop skills to move yourself through the cycle of change
Essential skills:
Understand that change happens
Nurture relationships for support
Communicate through the change
Vow to positive self-talk
Keep your eye on your personal goals
Surrender to 'That Which Knows the Way' |
