Thanks for reading the Friday Update!  This bi-monthly newsletter provides important announcements, news and information for our member campuses. We hope you like the new streamlined design!
 
MLK Day of Service Grants
Deadline: September 14thMLK small

 

NC Campus Compact is providing funding to support the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. In North Carolina we are accepting collaboration grants (3 or more campuses working together).  Learn more here.  

Election Funding Still Available!
Campus Election Engagement Project - NC
New Deadline: September 17th

 

NC Campus Compact has funding available to support:

  1. Collaboration -supporting proposed campus-wide coordinated effort that involves students, faculty, staff and community partners ($500)
     
  2. Awareness/Engagement Event  - supporting costs related to events that engage people in the election or raise awareness about election issues ($200)
     
  3. Transportation - supporting costs related to transporting students and/or community members to and from the polls on Election Day ($100)

Voice Your Choice video contest - Chance to win $200 
Deadline: October 15th 
 

 

We  are seeking 30-second videos on the importance of voting (Be   creative!).  Upload your video to a video-sharing site like YouTube or Vimeo and email the link to Videos should express the importance of voting.  They must be NONPARTISAN -- they cannot support or attack any political party or candidate.   Also, videos must not use any copyright-protected materials. If you didn't create the music or image yourself, please don't use it in your video.NC Campus Compact is pleased to partner with the NC Center for Voter Education to support the college division competition.

National Voter Registration Day NC Challenge - Win $200

  

National Voter Registration Day is September 25, 2012. We are challenging NC Campus Compact member campuses to facilitate voter registration events between September 1 and September 25.

 

We will give a $200 cash prize to the campus that registers the most students.  If your campus would like to participate, you must register on the National Voter Registration Day site.  Once you've signed on you will list your events on their website.  They will provide information and resources to support your efforts.  Be sure to track the number of folks your register!   You will report your results by October 3, 2012.   Winners will be announced on October 17, 2012. 

North Carolina Campuses Against Hunger: A Call to End Hunger in our Lifetime
Registration Deadline: September 24th   

 

On October 10-11, 2012 at Elon University, Stop Hunger Now , NC State's  Center for Student Leadership, Ethics & Public Service, and NC Campus Compact invite North Carolina higher education institutions committed to impacting hunger to gather for 2 days of learning, resourcing and inspiration. 

 

Working together, we hope we can use individual and collective strengths and resources of North Carolina campuses to address the systemic causes of hunger.  Campuses will be challenged to consider single initiatives or a full campus approach to alleviate hunger (e.g., research, teaching, engagement, common reading) - leave with a plan!

Every member campuses can select one undergraduate students who has made significant, innovative contributions to campus-based efforts to address community needs.

John H. Barnhill Civic Trailblazer Award

 

Member campuses are invited to nominate a student, in their final year,

who demonstrates innovation in civic engagement, creating foundations that expand partnerships amongst communities, campuses, and individuals. They can be a current nominees or former winner of the Community Impact Student Award.

Documentary Film Shorts Competition
Deadline: October 8th   

 

We invite students to create a 5-20 minute documentary film short depicting community engagement efforts on their campus.

  

Two grand prize winners will receive:  

  •  $1,000
  •  A screening of their film at the CSNAP student conference, November 2-3, 2012
  •  One Conference registration ($50 value)
  •  Critique of their film from the distinguished panel of judges 

 Three additional films will each have the chance to be selected as the "People's Pick" award winner.

 

ALL undergraduate and graduate students at member campuses are invited to apply - they do not have to be film students!

CSNAP Student Conference
Registration Deadline: October 19th    

 

November 2 -3, 2012 @ UNC Wilmington

 

Registration is open for the 2012 CSNAP (Citizenship, Service, Networking and Partnerships) Conference!  This annual student conference convenes civically minded student leaders for learning, sharing and networking.   

 

Friday night will include a tour or EUE Screen Gems studio (where the Iron Man movies were filmed) and "Civic Expressions" a showcase of poetry and art with a civic message.

 

Saturday will include workshops and a keynote speech by socio-political activist Paul Loeb, author of "Soul of a Citizen."

Board Members Sought for State Farm Youth Advisory Board

Deadline:  October 1st

 

Applications are available for new Board members for the State Farm Youth Advisory Board (YAB). The board is a diverse group of 30 youth, aged 17-20, charged with managing and distributing $5 million per year in philanthropic funding.

Call for Nominations:  K. Patricia Cross Future Leaders Award

Deadline: October 1st
 

This award recognizes graduate students who show exemplary promise as future leaders of higher education; whose work reflects a strong emphasis on teaching and learning; and who demonstrate a commitment to developing academic and civic responsibility in themselves and others.
 

All doctoral-level graduate students who are planning a career in higher education are eligible, regardless of academic department. Graduate students in fields where the Master's degree is the terminal degree, such as the MFA, are also eligible. (Nominees must hold student status in January 2013.)

C2C Fellows is a national network for undergraduates and recent graduates aspiring to sustainability leadership in politics and business. Applications are now being accepted for the C2C Fellows: Southeast Workshop on October 26-28, 2012 at the University of Tennessee.

The Verizon Foundation provides support to nonprofit organizations that address one of the following funding priorities: increasing student interest and achievement in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM); preventing domestic violence and helping victims gain independence; improving healthcare through innovative technology-based programs; fostering smart energy practices; and inspiring good environmental citizens among schools and communities. The average grant size ranges from $5,000 to $10,000.

UnitedHealth HEROES Service-Learning Grants
Deadline: October 15th

 

 


These grants, administered by Youth Service America,provide support to schools and other community-based nonprofit organizations for service-learning projects. Grants of up to $1,000 are available for youth-led (ages 5-25) service-learning projects which aim to combat childhood obesity through walking, running, or hiking programs. Funded projects should launch on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (January 21, 2013) and end on Global Youth Service Day (April 26-28, 2013).
