And now, a word from our Vicar:
Fr. Philip 2010 B&W

In my New Testament Class when we had finished reading some bit that showed one of the disciples or other champions of the faith behaving badly, my professor was fond of saying that it was hardly the kind of thing you would cook up if you were inventing a religion.  What he meant by this was that there are so many instances in the Bible where the heroes of our faith come across as petty and fickle and that if you were making up a religion you would not make them so vulnerable and human.  Why would you make up that the rock on which the faith was to be built (Peter) deny even knowing Jesus?  Nor would you have the great evangelist Paul get into an argument with his companion Barnabas and then go on separate mission trips.  These events show weakness not strength.

But there is another way to look at it.  When we look to characters in the Bible we see us.  We see fickle humans like ourselves.  We have events like James and John pulling Jesus aside and secretly asking him to make them a little higher in the kingdom of heaven.  Humanity is very much on display in the Bible.

In this Biblical witness, I think that we all see some of ourselves.  We have our good days and our bad days, just like those we see in the Bible.  I, of course would love to look at my life and see that I was ever growing in my love and knowledge of God, but if I am honest I must admit that this is not the case.  Some days things go very well and some days they do not.  And while the overall arc of my Christian life may be headed towards God and his kingdom it probably more resembles a chart for seismic activity rather than a straight line - it goes up and it goes down.

From this Biblical witness I think there are three things to remember.  First, we all fall short of the glory of God.  We will all fail at times, be we St. Peter or simply us.  We are not perfect and we will have times where we are not living up to who it is that God has called us to be.  Second, we must remember that while we know that the failings will come and that we will succumb, we are to live lives in which our spiritual successes will grow and our spiritual failings will diminish.   That should always be the goal.  And finally, we must rejoice in the fact that we worship a God who knows us, who knows what we are like.  God does not people his church with those who are perfect (it would be a pretty small church if he did) but, he populates it with us.  People who sometimes get right and sometimes do not.

Prayer Team

Just a reminder that there are now blue cards in the pews for you to fill out with your prayer requests.  You can place your completed cards in the communion plate and they will be added to the Parish Prayer List.  The prayer team will be praying specifically for the individuals that you submit.  In addition, we will continue to pray for those on our prayer list during Sunday Worship (unless you specify otherwise).  Furthermore, on Sundays after Communion, there will be members of the prayer team available to pray for any specific needs you may have.

Thanks to all of the individuals who have volunteered for this most wonderful ministry.

Budget News

The Budget is probably not everyone's favorite topic and it is most definitely not the most exciting, but going forward we are going to be publishing "high level" budget information every month in the newsletter.  This does not mean that the details are a secret, it is just an acknowledgement that most people are not interested in that level of detail.  If you are interested the full budget is placed on the bulletin board every month.  If you desire a personal copy just let Jill know.

Also, we do not send out monthly statements about where you are in terms of your pledge, largely because it would be costly.  However, if you would like this information please contact Jill at the church office and she can get that information for you.  We thank all of you for your generous contributions and hope that you will continue to give in the future.

The basics of the budget are this.  On average it takes about $17,550 a month to keep St. Margaret's up and running, which requires around $14,600 in monthly pledge giving.  Below are the amounts of income that we have received in the first five months of the year.  January is high because there are a number of people who give their entire pledge for the year in that month.

January    $28,054

February  $10,594

March      $10,894

April        $14,265

May         $12,645

Thank You

A special thank you to all of the Sunday School teachers who have volunteered their time this year.  Special thanks to Amy Cunningham, Stephanie Fowler, Susanne McDonald, Wendy O'Brien, Kate & Emilio Silvas and Laura Wooldridge.

Notes from the Diocese

Father's Day is June 19; the Habitat for Humanity Task Force is sending out cards to the parishes who have participated in the annual Father's Day fundraiser for Habitat in the past.  If you need more cards this year than you have before or if you have not participated in the past and would like to do so this year, please contact Janet Drane at janet.drane@sbcglobal.net or 210-288-9495, and she will get the cards to you.  Last year this fundraiser provided enough money to give three $10,000 grants to churches who were building around the diocese, plus a $1,000 tithe to the international Habitat organization for each grant.

Next Wednesday, June 8, the San Antonio Area Communicators Brown Bag group will meet at noon at the Bishop Jones Center in the Mission Room.  This time the topic will be "branding" and the importance of consistency throughout ministries with logo use, etc.  As always, all are welcome to join us; just bring a brown bag lunch and we will provide a beverage and dessert.  If you have any questions, contact Barbara Duffield at barbara.duffield@dwtx.org or 888/210-824-5387.
