Holiday Recipes: No Egg for your Nog
Yoga: 40 days & Northbeach

Season's Greetings.  I'm writing from my hometown where there's a blanket of white snow on the lawn and it's starting to flurry!  Got my ginger tea and gluten-free ginger snap cookies (with a dab of almond butter - a great combo!)  by my side.

I'll keep this one short, with a few tips for holiday survival and warm wishes for a healthy & happy holiday.

Breathe & BE well,

Ali

Want to be 'on your game' during and post the holidays?  Make surey you're incorporating these 5 simple things.

5 CRUCIAL (& simple) steps for a HEALTHY & HAPPY holiday

1. Drink lots of spiked egg nog... I mean WATER.  I have been craving some egg nog, and yes, I'll likely have some (though I'm also excited to try the vegan recipe below).  But water is where it's at.  Water is necessarily for nearly all body processes... and what that really means is that you're more likely to get sick, and overeat if you're not drinking enough water.  So before you hit up the holiday cocktails or that cup of coffee, take in a class of good ole H2O.

2. Eat!  No really, eat... and eat regularly.  Eat 3 meals a day.  Don't skip meals so that you can eat more at the holiday party - you know you end up sabotaging yourself that way.  Try to focus on 3 meals a day.  This way you'll balance your blood sugar (so you can cope with the holiday crowds), and you'll be less likely to overindulge later.

3. Bug out!  Yup, eat your bugs, meaning probiotics.  You've actually got more bacteria in your gut than there are cells in your body!  But these lil guys can be good...when the bad ones are kept in check.  Probiotics help to keep our gut flora (gut bacteria) in balance.  Having good gut bacteria helps us to digest foods, stay regular, fight off illness and make & absorb the necessary vitamins/minerals.   So if you think you just might happen to eat too much sugar or refined foods in the upcoming days, probiotics can help you to deal with the excess.   Yogurt with active cultures (I like  plain full fat varieties mixed with a lil cinnamon & ground flaxseed), raw cultured veggies (think RAW sauerkraut), or miso are great food sources.   And you can also take a supplement if that's more realistic for you.  Try Dr. Ohhira's or TruFlora.  (Or with short notice before the holidays, consider making a trip to your local health foods store (Whole Foods will do) and talking to the specialists there for the brand they recommend).  Consider it a gift to yourself.... you get what you pay for and you're worth the ching ching.

4. Move your body.  Even if you just go for a 10 min walk - move it folks.  This will support digestion, circulation and improve mood to help keep you in that jolly holiday state of mind (without the hangover).

5.  Breathe.  Whether it's during exercise, while 'sitting' (my preferred name for meditaiton), or when you're watching  'It's a Wonderful Life' for the gazillionth time, take a few deep breaths & find that you're able to truly enjoy a little more.

(Re: pumpkin pie recipe.  My apologies to the folks who asked for the recipe on Facebook!  I left the recipe (along with my heart, hee hee :) in SF.  But I promise it will taste just as delicious in the New Year when I'm able to follow up with the recipe)
