    cocoa nibs FOOD FACTS
    Cuckoo for Cacao!!

If you're a die-hard chocolate fan... you're speaking my language.

To be honest, I'm going through a bit of a chocoholic phase that begs some deeper considerations, because given all of chocolate's mood enhancing benefits, I'm a bit curious as to why I'm seeking this 'pick-me up' so much... but alas, that's a deeper issue for me to ponder a bit more...

In the meantime, let me just tell you that there are some amazing benefits to chocolate, and if we can enjoy it, without 'needing' it, we can feel good about this divine treat.

    BENEFITS of CACAO
(and when I say 'cacao' I don't mean 'cocoa' the Swiss Miss Drink, although I do have a soft spot in my memories for those little freeze-dried marshmallows :) I say 'cacao' meaning the bean... that originates from a plant, and is native to the tropics. Generally this bean is processed and combined with sugar and milk, but it is the bean that holds the goodness... so the closer we can get to that whole food, the more benefits we get.

ANTIOXIDANTS - cacao packs way more antioxidants than red wine & green tea. These benefit us by improving circulation & digestion, protecting us against heart disease & keeping our skin looking like a baby's!

MAGNESIUM - This mineral relaxes our muscles (that means your belly too... no wonder we feel good after we eat chocolate!) & supports our bones. Some studies say 80% of Americans are deficient in magnesium, yet we need it for most cellular functions!

SEROTONIN, DOPAMINE - these are just a few of the neurotransmitters that are activated when we eat cacao. These are our 'feel good' chemicals in the brain that help to lift depression & make us happy! So yes, cacao can literally make us feel happiness.

    CACAO NIBS
    Have you tried them?

As you probably know, the dark chocolates are going to pack the most punch. BUT... even better is the cacao bean itself.

Here's your chance to try CACAO NIBS.

(Ok, yeah, so without the sugar, it's gonna taste bitter, but... if you add a natural sweetener, you can get the benefit of the chocolate without the blood sugar spike & crash)

Here are some CACAO NIB TREAT IDEAS:
    1) 1 tbsp cacao nibs & maple syrup (approx 50 calories) it's crunchy & sweet!
    2) sprinkle cacao nibs on ice cream for your own version of chocolate chip. (have you tried Coconut Bliss?!)
    3) Mix into oatmeal, cereal, or trail mixes
    4) Mix into smoothies

You can buy Cacao Nibs at your health foods store, or even on Amazon. Below is a link to a good brand, SunFood, on Amazon.
