Dear Friends and Esteemed Colleagues,

It is July, the time of the year oddly enough, when many directors are thinking about their Holiday concert programs. Lauren Keiser Music Publishing & Keiser Classical has many works to choose from that have become favorites, alongside newly-published titles that will put you in a festive mood--not only for the holidays but for your next pops concert event, too.

In that spirit, we have highlighted composers and works from our catalog to make it easy for you to include great contemporary repertoire on your next program--no matter what the occasion. In addition, we're offering a limited-time promotion on Holiday Rentals. Full details on this offer are included below. So without further ado, we proudly present our own take on "Christmas in July!"
Holiday Titles
ornmtsAngels' Dance was composed for the 1995 St. Olaf College Christmas Festival in Northfield, Minnesota. The orchestra, under the direction of composer Steve Amundson, gave the first performance in December of that year.
The work has been performed throughout the world by dozens of prestigious organizations including the BBC Concert Orchestra, Liverpool Philharmonic, Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra, Louisiana Philharmonic, and the Oregon, Atlanta, Toronto, Edmonton, Kansas City, Florida, Detroit, Cincinnati, Portland, New Mexico, Houston, and Chicago Symphony Orchestras. It has been recorded by Houston Symphony Orchestra "Houston Symphony Christmas Festival", the St. Olaf Orchestra on St. Olaf Records; and by Wheaton College Conservatory of Music Symphony Orchestra.

A Holiday Hoedown came about when Garrison Keillor and Philip Brunelle asked composer Daniel Kallman to write this for Keillor's Christmas Special with the National Symphony in Washington D.C. It was broadcast live nationwide on public radio in 1992. In the composer's words, the request was "to fit as many familiar holiday tunes as possible into a five-minute orchestral piece, specifically requesting that I close with a quote of Handel's 'Hallelujah Chorus' from the Messiah."  Among the many orchestras that have performed Holiday Hoedown are the Nashville, Dallas, and Virginia Symphony Orchestras. Other favorite Holiday Orchestral works by Daniel Kallman include Messiah, Prince of Peace and Trinity Canticles.

Christmas with Mr. Grump for narrator and small orchestra features contrabassoon portraying Mr. Grump, a surly walrus who lives near the north pole in the village of North Stump. Composer Peter Hamlin wrote both music and story of the wonderful Christmastime fable that won the 1984 Corporation for Public Broadcasting National Award.

Grump doesn't like Christmas (nor people having fun). Nontheless, when it snows too much for even Santa and his reindeer to deliver presents to the children of the town, Mr. Grump may be the only one who can help save Christmas.
The work is 16', with optional cuts allowing a 12-minute performance. This piece has been very performed by many orchestras and received enthusiastic reviews over the years, a few of which can be found below.

"A lovely blend of music and narration. The production is lovely; the story is sweet and humorous and an appropriate length, especially for children."
--Comments from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting Awards Ceremony.

"Christmas with Mr. Grump was truly a hit...the house was packed (even the standing room was taken) and the piece was enjoyed by all."
--Kevin McKelvie, Alma (MI) Symphony Orchestra Music Director and Conductor.

"Children will find the sounds of the orchestra both meaningful and delightful, especially Mr. Grump's portrayal by the contrabassoon. Likewise, the narrative, with its strong sense of sound, will mesmerize listeners."
--Lucille Lettow, University of Northern Iowa

Christmas in a Minute can be performed with vocal solo, soli, or chorus and orchestra is a charming adaptaion of Chopin's "Minute Waltz" with lyrics and arrangment by pianist Jeffrey Biegel, orchestrated by Kermit Poling. This work is pure fun (but not for the faint-of-diction!) Reservations for this year's Holiday programs have already begun--call us today to make Christmas In a Minute part of your program this year!

Festive Christmas Overture for orchestra and optional chorus is the most frequently performed work of composer David Ott. This sparkling gem makes an excellent opener or closer for any holiday concert. Built on strong and joyous melodies, supported by brilliant orchestration, this overture captures the festive spirit of joy and hope. Constructed in broad ABA format (spirited-reflective-spirited), Festive Christmas Overture features solos for flute and horn, a brass chorale, dazzling woodwind writing and colorful percussion treatment. With well over one-hundred performances across the United States, it has proven to be an audience favorite. Ready in just one rehearsal.

In addition, Lauren Keiser Music Publishing is delighted to offer you other favorites and newly-published works by David Ott for Holiday Pops, including Angel's Harp, Christmas with Johann Strauss, The Twelve Days of Christmas, 'Tis the Season of Bells, and Fantasy on Adeste Fidelus.
Pops Programs
BachroxCommissioned by the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Please Turn Your Cell Phones On! goes from cell phone disturbance to orchestra cell phone duet, to the audience ringing their own phones, all within the span of nine minutes. Composed by David Rimelis, the ending of the piece is a little surprise joke when none other than the Maestro's own cell phone rings right before the final note! The piece is full of audience-pleasing fun and participation that has been enjoyed by orchestras including the Colorado, Charleston, Baltimore, and Nashville Symphony Orchestras. Sampler with cell phone sounds available on rental with orchestra parts.

Rimelis's flair for humor and writing well-crafted and accessible works has provided delightful music for many occasions. Looking for a sure Halloween hit for scary voices and orchestra? The Cool Ghoul has what you want, with just enough "ca-coffin-y" thrown in to keep you on the edge of your seat!
Commissioned and Premiered by the Eugene (Oregon) Symphony. Performed by Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Victoria, Western Australia, Charleston and Akron Symphony Orchestras in addition to a number of high school and college ensembles.

Cut Me Loose from this World, Dedicated to the victims of Hurricane Katrina in September 2005, is subtitled by Rimelis "A Funeral and Ascention In New Orleans." It was commissioned by the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra underwritten by the State of Louisiana, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism. The work encompasses four continuous sections including the March to the Church, Church Service, Dirge, and the Cutting Loose of the Body. The orchestra is broken into two groups: the brass, percussion, solo clarinet and saxophone grouped as a marching band represent the mourners while the rest of the orchestra are the onlookers or the second line. Three upcoming performances in January 2010 by the Nashville Symphony Orchestra.

For an engaging evening with orchestra complete with great music as well as entertainment, there are great choices including Match Point, Fanfare for the Family Farm, and The Magic Oboe by composer Gwyneth Walker. Match point is a musical dramatization of the final points in a tennis match, complete with tennis rackets and balls, First Prize Winner in the Composers Guild National Competition 1985. Work premiered as band version with tennis legend Billy Jean King featured in the percussion section bouncing tennis balls on the timpani.

The Magic Oboe features that instrument in not only a musical role, but also as part of a "magic act" with the conductor as magician. Props are a few common items. Upcoming performances in the next season from Southeastern Ohio and The Phoenix Symphony.

Fanfare for the Family Farm is a boisterous four-minute concert opener featuring a percussion section of farm implements: milk can, pails, and cowbells. Premiered by Toronto Symphony and performed by dozens of orchestras from university to professional, including Nashville, North Carolina, and Grand Rapids Symphonies.

For a touch of jazz, a helping of Klezmer, a dash of Broadway, or a spoonful of Stravinsky, you can satisfy  your musical cravings here. Infernal was written freely after Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite". Composer David Schiff was commissioned to write the work by The Seattle Symphony orchestra, who premiered and released a recording of it on the Starbuck's record label. CD review. Four Sisters is a jazz violin concerto and tribute to Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday, and Sarah Vaughn. It was premiered by Regina Carter with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Another tribute to an iconic American vocalist is the composer's Stomp for orchestra. An hommage to James Brown, it was recorded by the Baltimore Symphony with David Zinman on the Argo label. CD review. The work was also re-scored and premiered in it's new, brassier incarnation by the American Composers Orchestra this past February including 2 performances along with an appearance at Carnegie Hall. For Chamber Ensemble, Nonet for four clarinets and string quintet was premiered by David Schifrin and Chamber Music Northwest, performance review here.

For music featured in films, you will definitely want to investigate the works of the iconic Mr. Lalo Schifrin. Some of his works featured in the Caros Saura film Tango soundtrack are available exclusively through Lauren Keiser Music Publishing, including Tango del Atardecer, which has been performed a number of times in Europe and the U.S. Schifrin's Latin Jazz Suite is a tour de force through the popular and dance musics of Latin America, featuring large jazz band, trumpet and tenor sax features, and latin percussion. Recorded by WDR Big Band, Cologne, Germany.

The documentary film "Katahdin" led to the Film Score Suite of the same name by composer and New York Pops arranger Tom Myron. The piece invokes the majesty of the namesake mountain in Maine. The Penobscott Tribe that originated in that country dubbed the single imposing peak in their native language; it translates as "Greatest Mountain". Brass and percussive muscularity combined with gentle and fierce invokations of nature's sounds create a thoroughly enjoyable orchestral tone poem that is unmistakably American in spirit.
