Greetings!
The Southwest Region is back in action after the summer break (I wish I could say the same!). As you may have noted from President Dave Bishton's article last month, a focus this year is on using social media in a professional way to further engage members and chapter leaders. I kept our Facebook and LinkedIn links in this issue (see below) and I hope you take this opportunity to participate. No idle chat involved - this is where you can keep abreast of topics that are of concern to CSI, the SW Region, and its members.
Happy Halloween!
From ghoulies and ghosties And long-leggedy beasties And things that go bump in the night, Good Lord, deliver us! ~Scottish Saying

SOUTHWEST REGION
- COOL PLACE TO BE
David A. Bishton, RA, CSI, CCS, CCCA,
Southwest Region President
Last month I made the point that the Southwest Region primarily exists to support its chapters and their leaders, and to add value to the member experience of unaffiliated CSI members. Is that such a big deal? Maybe it sounds kind of boring?
Until you attend an event like CONSTRUCT in Phoenix last month, where a pretty enthusiastic assembly of CSI member s and leaders from all over the country got together to support each other and celebrate the best of construction expertise and quality. The Southwest Region was represented by members from all of our 8 chapters, and we got together formally and informally many times during the convention.
From our opening night informal dinner at Hard Rock Café, to our Region Caucus, to the Phoenix Chapter's bowling extravaganza, to the Awards Gala, we represent a Region that is noticeably strong about supporting each other. We sat together and celebrated new fellows Neil Davison, FCSI, CCS, CCCA and Nina Giglio, FCSI, CCS, SCIP, as well as J. Norman Hunter Award winner Paul Simonsen, FCSI, CCS, CCCA. Casual meetings in the exhibit hall, in the lobby between sessions, or in the CSI Leader Lounge found Southwest Region members looking out for each other. I was impressed with the camaraderie. Pretty cool stuff!

In the annual Institute election held in February 2013, we will be electing a new director from the Southwest Region to serve on the Institute Board. Since July 1, 2011 Ron Geren, CSI, CCS, CCCA, SCIP, AIA of the Phoenix Chapter has been ably serving in that role, and we thank him for his leadership. Among others, his role in the recent CSI brand revitalization effort was a key one.
Nominations, both to volunteer or to recommend another, are now open for this 2-year position which starts on July 1, 2013. The current board members are listed at http://bit.ly/QIvuHx. More info can be found in the Institute Bylaws http://bit.ly/P7meOb; Ron Geren would also be happy to tell you more about the position and its responsibilities (ron@specsandcodes.com).
Vice-President Joe Morales (joem@roofmanda.com) will receive your nominations until October 19, and nominations (up to 4 members in good standing of the region) will be submitted to Institute no later than November 1 for appearance on the ballot.

ARE SPECIFIERS WEAK IN FAITH?
by Sheldon Wolf
The main reason we've been doing things the same way for the past hundred fifty years, is - that we've been doing things the same way for the past hundred fifty years. It's human nature to keep what's comfortable, even though it may no longer work, or even if something better is available. I'm fairly certain the original versions of the contract documents we use, and the way we write them, made perfect sense when introduced, but is that still true?

NON-TRADITIONAL COMMITTEE CHAIRS NEEDED - WHY?
YES
- To introduce chapter leaders in like positions to fellow Region cannon fodder, no...co-conspirators, no... volunteer leaders (better).
- To encourage chapter leaders to share (specifically) what works and what doesn't work with other like-minded leaders.
- To keep an eye open for resources that would benefit...

Yuma Proving Ground Breaks Ground on World's Largest Vertical Wind Tunnel
Sept. 27--YUMA PROVING GROUND -- Although there is nothing but a vacant lot there
