Greetings!
Last month I ranted about the pervasiveness of electronic media, but I need to counter that by noting some useful on-line resources. Pardon my Luddite mentality (I'm coming around, honest!) but I am just discovering such tools as LinkedIn, SpecGuy, 4Specs, and of course the CSI forums (fora?). Am I missing any that you find useful? Let me know and in this brief monthly note I will mentioned them for others to discover.
In the meantime, maybe I really should learn how to text, twitter, and all that.

SOUTHWEST REGION
PRESIDENT'S LETTER
Jim Whitfield FCSI, CCPR, CTC, LEED AP
Southwest Region President

"Every man owes a part of his time and money to the business or industry in which he is engaged. No man has the moral right to withhold his support from an organization that is striving to improve conditions within his sphere."
- Theodore Roosevelt
The above quote was used in a great article on Certification in the February 2012 Construction Specifier by Peter A. Baker CSI, CCPR. This quote really hit home and was exactly my thinking when considering a subject as a Presidents Letter to the Region. I sincerely feel I have gained far more out of my involvement and active participation in CSI over the years.
I have been an active member of CSI for now for well over 20 years. The opportunities my membership has provided include incredible friendships throughout the US, leadership skills that benefit me daily and educational opportunities not available anywhere else.

(by "SuperUser" - reprinted from the
Phoenix CSI Chapter Web Site)
In 1961, folk singer and political activist Pete Seeger along with folk singer Joe Hicke rson, adapted the words of a Ukrainian folk song to the tune of an old lumberjack song to create "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?" The cyclic lyrics lead to the death of soldiers in combat, and individual recordings of the song by the Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul, and Mary made it a popular anti-war song later in the same decade. But this article isn't about the politics of war, or even music for that matter. This article is about the apparent, and somewhat disturbing, decline in the number of experienced construction specifiers.

What Happened to the Master Builder?
by Sheldon Wolfe, RA, CSI, CCS, CCCA

It's time architects accepted reality: They no longer are master builders, and haven't been for a long time. It's nothing to get excited about (well, not too excited), and there is no reason to maintain the fiction that architects are what they were in the good old days. In fact, there is good reason to admit the truth and move on.
Building materials have evolved, fabrication and construction have evolved, and the tools of our profession have evolved, yet we continue to create and use construction documents the same way we have done for nearly two hundred years, simply because that's what we have done for nearly two hundred years. And, even though architects do less now than they did many years ago, we maintain the fiction that architects are master builders.

One of Damon Carson's customers recently told him, "You're really just a professional dumpster diver, aren't you?"
Carson took it as a compliment. "I've been called a lot of things: Dr. Junk, dumpster jockey, trash wizard. It doesn't matter, as long as they know I've got what they need," he says.

Revised Design Concept - DIA South Terminal Redevelopment
Program
In January 2012, Denver International Airport unveiled a revised design concept for the South Terminal Redevelopment Program. The new design is very similar to the concept that was revealed in July 2010 with changes that afford a number of efficiencies and cost savings while still keeping the design visually stunning.
