FEBRUARY 2012

I'LL BE BACK ...

Greetings!

Social networking seems to be the rage, although it's sometimes difficult to feel the enthusiasm that others seem to have about LinkedIn, FaceBook, etc. My attitude about computers, software, the Internet and those newest fascinations - apps - has always been that they are tools; the means to an end, not the end itself. Maybe it's got to do with age (I obtained my B.S. in engineering using a slide rule), or an "us against the machines attitude" (The Terminator syndrome?), but sometimes I am saddened by what seems like a large part of society's dependence on these tools to function. Oh, I realize that in business these same tools allow you to reach a larger customer base and interact with people more efficiently, but hasn't something been lost as well?  So - what do you think? (You can reach me by e-mail, on FaceBook, or on LinkedIn, or on g-mail, or ...)

Assigning Responsibility
by Sheldon Wolfe, RA, CSI, CCS, CCCA

One of the biggest querespstions in construction is "Who is responsible?" It would seem that a fair allocation of risk would be based on the authority and knowledge of the parties involved, but joint-and-several liability and the misguided urge to go for the deep pockets can obviate most attempts to be fair. Still, if the initial assignment of risk makes sense, it will be less likely for challenges to end up in court.

SOUTHWEST REGION MEMBERSHIP: FY2012 MID-YEAR CHECKUP

David Bishton, RA, CSI, CCS, CCCA, Southwest Region Vice President

mtg

Our Region's total membership has held remarkably steady during this fiscal year. In June 2011, there were 688 chapter and non-affiliated members of the Southwest Region. In January 2012, we stood at 685 - a difference of only 3 members or 0.4 percent. Yet we also know our numbers have fluctuated and decreased over the last several tough years. In March 2010, our Region election ballot was sent to 744 members - one year later the mailing list was 80 fewer. And as I write this, our official total is 676.

HOW DOES SPEC WRITING WORK? - MAGIC SHORTCUTS

David Bishton, RA, CSI, CCS, CCCA

 magician

Many architects believe in keeping words to a minimum when writing specifications, mainly because they so fervently detest the whole process. If a spec can't be composed quickly with CAD software, it just doesn't have the same relevance for how to spend project time. How does a project manager have time to write a project specification when there are always so many aspects of the design to revisit and details to change?

First Section of Ambitious Mountain View Corridor Opens to the Public

The parallel, three-mile stretches of frontage road crossing what used to be farmland west of the Utah County city of Lehi might seem simple enough, but they are the key first portions of the Mountain View Corridor to open for public use. The project is an ambitious 35-mile freeway, transit and trail system connecting 13 municipalities along the western edge of the Salt Lake Valley.
