APRIL 2011

SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST

Greetings!

When CSI was just a pup, and the fledgling Phoenix and Denver Chapters were starting up in the Southwest, the Alfred Hitchcock thriller North by Northwest captivated movie audiences. It was a tale of mistaken identity, with an innocent man pursued across the U.S. by agents of a mysterious organization who think he is interfering in their plans to smuggle out government secrets.

It's no secret that the Albuquerque Chapter has organized a great conference for Southwest CSI members, starting in less than 2 weeks. Who attends - is it only for Chapter leaders? If you're just an innocent CSI member, and don't want to be mistaken for a Chapter president (or a spy), is this for you? Answers: No and Yes. Southwest Region Conferences can be a much easier way to attend a CSI "convention" right in our own backyard. We have in store an all day Continuing Education Conference where you can obtain up to 7 credit hours of learning from expert instructors. We have a great product show at the Albuquerque Convention Center. There are indeed some meetings geared towards CSI leadership and planning, but only the President/President-Elect Training, is labeled TOP SECRET.  You already know if you've been elected - no mistaken identity here.

Region Conference really is all for CSI, all for learning, networking, and professionalism. And maybe having a bit of fun before things heat up. There's still time to register and attend, and for many of us it's a manageable drive or a cheap flight to Albuquerque. We hope you can be there.

VoteTIME TO VOTE

The Region election ballot is in your mailbox, got there on April 6, so please cast your ballot if you haven't already done so. The short survey following will give us valuable input for planning the coming fiscal year.

Last day to vote: Wednesday, April 27, 5:00 p.m.

Can you be Region Treasurer? Teri Hand, CSI, CDT of the Phoenix Chapter has ably filled this position for 4 years (or is it more, Teri?). We are looking for a new volunteer to take that role, and were not able to find someone prior to the ballot deadline. You CAN help out - here's how:

Treasurer responsibilities include:

  • Verifying accounting from the previous treasurer and transferring the signature authority for the Region bank account. Preparing new signature cards of authorized officers.
  • Coordinating the financial audit at the close of the fiscal year, either by a region committee or a certified public accountant.
  • Preparing the annual region budget. Presenting the budget to the board for approval.
  • Maintaining accurate bookkeeping records.
  • Paying accounts due with proper distribution to the various accounts.
  • Receiving and posting region dues or assessments.
  • Submitting a financial report at the annual Region meeting. Listing recommendations for future budgets and operating procedures.
  • Preparing a schedule of fixed annual payments including completion and deadline dates for tax reporting forms.

The best part is that this system is already in place, and a new Treasurer will not be starting over. Teri has done a fine job of driving - you can help by taking a spell at the wheel. Please contact Jim Whitfield at email.

OPEN LETTER TO THE REGION

FROM THE VICE-PRESIDENT'S DESK

Jim Whitfield, FCSI, CCPR, LEED AP

Winter is over, spring showers are upon us and change is in the air. At CSI we will change Institute, Region, and Chapter officers in the next few months. The change of leadership is very important at all levels. It provides a necessary break for the current leaders, some time for them to catch their breath, and is an exciting time for incoming officers. At the Institute level, the Southwest Region will again be well represented...continued
