PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Robert Mallory, FCSI, CCS, CCCA, CCPR, LEED AP
It's back-to-school time again and it got me thinking this year. I had always gotten depressed in late August thinking about going back to school as a child. From a student's perspective it is depressing. But, on the other hand, from a teacher's perspective, it is probably a lot of fun and gives a sense of being worthwhile. This got me thinking about CSI and CSI's Mission. CSI is about learning how, and then teaching the construction industry how, to communicate correctly. Logically if CSI is about continually teaching others, and teachers have more fun than students, then it only seems right that CSI = FUN! As CSI members we need to keep in mind the teachings of the PRM, the cardinal rules of "Say it once and in the right place," and the 4-C's of construction communication. These are thoughts that we as an organization need to keep at the forefront and continually remind co-workers, colleagues, and business associates about daily. In our workaday lives we forget how important CSI is to our industry. Can you imagine a day without CSI? What a mess that would be! Construction Projects would grind to a halt slowly as the whole team drowns in paper work and slow access to information. CSI's Mission statement should read: "CSI is the Leader in Construction Industry Communications. We lead through Education, Certification, and the development of Tools and Formats to properly document and communicate The Designer's Vision through to fruition." We, as the Southwest Region, need to live this statement in everything we do as professionals. The value proposition of CSI is that CSI is the only organization working at the commercial level that is cross-disciplinary and the only organization focused on construction communication. We see the complete conversation from inception to the day after demolition. This means we need to teach the cardinal roles as outlined above, minute-by-minute, to make sure everyone on a project team understands the importance of complete industry communication. So do your part, lead the thought, teach others and have fun doing it. CSI does equal fun, so have fun! Please call your Chapter President today and ask where help is needed. We need to make sure that our Chapters and Region are healthy and robust as we continue to teach the world of construction the proper ways to communicate.

LAS VEGAS CHAPTER - Cosmic Bowling Event
Thanks to Michelle Merillat, CSI for pictures of one of her Chapter's annual special events, held this summer. Attendance wasn't like previous years high standards, but we should all have such high standards! And a good time was had by all! You can see her pictures at Las Vegas bowling photos.
So what is your Chapter up to this year? Remember, this e-newsletter is a great opportunity to share your event news and photos with the rest of the Region. We all gain from hearing about other Chapter activities, maybe wondering "if our Chapter could do that?", and being reminded of our CSI friends that we may otherwise only see at conferences and conventions.
And you Chapter Presidents, this is your forum, once each fiscal year, to share something about your Chapter or about your goals and hopes for CSI. This can be as easy as sending me your regular President's Message from your monthly newsletter, or contributing a special article. Last year we did it in alphabetical order, from Albuquerque-to-Tucson. Here is the suggested schedule - please let me know if a date needs to be shifted for you and I'll do my best.

GREETING FROM CSI ALBUQUERQUE CHAPTER
Andre Larroque, CSI, CCS, CCCA, AIA, NCARB Albuquerque Chapter CSI President
Summer 2009 has been a busy time for the leadership of CSI Albuquerque. In July we held a long-range planning session in order to adjust as necessary our roadmap for the foreseeable future. This was done, of course, with due respect to the 'Elephant-in-the-Room', the current state of the construction sector economy. In the end, we identify a bright future for the chapter and CSI in general, despite the economy or mumblings about the threat of extinction to the beloved Spec Writer. We are re-energized and determined to do whatever we can this year to add value to the status of being a CSI Albuquerque member, even in these hard times. The added value includes each member's knowledge that if they've been impacted by today's poor economy, the local organization should be considered a resource to explore. We have decided to offer reduced membership renewal rates for those who have been recently laid off and had their dues paid by their employer. We are putting the 'network' of local CSI firms and contacts into action, asking that we all help fellow members find new jobs if needed, or in creating a new niche for providing services or products. And finally, there can be no greater value to Chapter membership than to have available the great educational programs, certifications, and tools that help improve skills in preparation for the inevitable turn-around. Regardless of the level of present activity, new developments in project delivery methods, processes, and technology will continue in the effort to make design and construction more efficient and functional. This will require those who plan on staying in the game to keep up with these latest trends and be well-prepared to put them to work as new opportunities arise. Being part of an organization devoted to this body of knowledge can be of advantage in a world of heightened and expanded competition. Working toward our goal of increasing the already-dependable quality of local chapter educational programs, our programs committee chair has put together a list of topics and speakers for the 2009-2010 year. We have just conducted the first regular program of this year which was a tour of the nearly-complete Hotel Andaluz renovation in downtown Albuquerque. This tour of the first hotel listed on the National Register of Historic Places to pursue LEED Gold was a success, considering the challenges in visiting two weeks prior to its scheduled opening. The logistical problems were well-met through the tireless efforts of our Arrangements and Education Committee chairpersons. Our next major event is the 10th Annual CSI Albuquerque Continuing Education Conference & Product Show to be held at the Albuquerque Convention Center on Wednesday, October 14th. I invite all CSI Southwest Region members to attend. The planning committee for this event has worked all summer to put together another solid group of educational sessions with a special emphasis on quality control in construction documentation. You may access the registration web site directly through this link: www.regonline.com/csicec2009 for a description of the programs. We try to schedule this conference during the most glorious time of the year in Albuquerque (weather-wise) and coincident with multitude of autumn fiestas in the Land of Enchantment, including that little one involving hot air balloons. Well, enough hot air from me. I hope to see some of you at the CEC & PS on October 14th or at some other chapter event here in Albuquerque. You are always welcome to our regular lunch program meetings which are typically held on the 2nd Monday of each month. Keep up with the latest in our Chapter by going to our web site at www.csiabq.org. ¡Hasta la Vista! |
CSI CONVENTION RECAP
Indianapolis treated Construct2009 and the CSI Convention well on June 16-19, and Southwest Region was well represented. Yes, we all dealt with Midwest humidity as best we could. We enjoyed historic buildings, museums and monuments, convenient restaurants (bars), and, of course, the excellent educational and networking opportunities of the yearly CSI national gathering. Especially gratifying was the awarding of CSI Fellowship to Albuquerque's own Robert Mallory, FCSI, accompanied by other Region fellows like Gene Valentine, FCSI, Greg Markling, FCSI and Jim Whitfield, FCSI. Albuquerque's Joy Davis, CDT and Denver's Dave Bishton, CCS also took plenty of pictures which can be viewed at CSI Convention photos The Southwest Region caucus was well attended as discussion focused on governance changes, Chapter updates, and ongoing invigoration of Region activities. Former Region Director Neil Davison, CCS, CCCA will now be focused solely on Institute affairs as our Region's representative. President (former Director) Robert Mallory, FCSI (+ just about every other CSI initial you can name) and President-Elect Ron Geren, CCS, CCCA will continue to work for the welfare of the Region during FY2010. Whether you're a Chapter officer or just interested member, we hope you consider joining your fellow Region members for good fellowship, fun, and learning at the next convention to be held in Philadelphia, May 11-14, 2010.
