An introduction from our new Acupunturist Cathy Keenan
Cathy Keenan
Happy 2010! May it be a year that graces your life with good health and happiness.

I am very excited to be the newest addition to the very talented team at Riverdale Homeopathic Clinic. 2009 has been an incredible year for me as I became a new mother to a gorgeous baby boy we named Ethan. Ethan continues to teach me what it means to be present and the value of patience. He has become my most precious teacher.

Each of our lives are a gift and our challenges unique. Our path to optimum health varies from person to person. Finding balance in a world so out of balance can feel immensely overwhelming. Where do we start? Healing is often a slow and gradual path, but the pay off will be immeasurable.

My training is in acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM is the oldest, continually practiced, literate medicine in the world. It is an intricate and precise system of health care which some believe dates back approx. 5000 years. That's many years of evolving, observing and treating the human body & mind. Acupuncture has been shown to be extremely effective in treating pain, digestive disorders, anxiety, depression, insomnia, menstrual disorders, and a multitude of other conditions.

My practice includes the practical application of acupuncture, the use of warming herbs called moxibustion, cupping, gua sha, body work and nutritional counseling from a TCM perspective. With TCM you are encouraged to be an active participant in your own recovery. The power is within you! Acupuncture can be used as the primary treatment or as a complementary therapy to conventional western medicine.

I look forward to meeting with you and being your guide to optimum health. Please feel free to contact the clinic to set up and consultation.

With light and love,

Cathy Keenan

THE ESSENCE OF AROMATHERAPY
Part 1

Aromatherapy is a natural therapy and a healing art which uses Essential Oils, to balance and treat the mind, body and spirit.

Although the word aromatherapy was first used in the past century to describe the use of Essential Oils from plants as a form of treatment, the principles on which it is based are very, very old.  Aromatherapy has its roots in the most ancient healing practices of humankind, for the plants from which we now derive Essential Oils had been used for thousands of years before the technique of distilling oils was discovered.

WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS?

Every aromatic plant and tree has a characteristic essence or essences. These essences are made in the plants by very specialized cells in different parts of the plants. Essences are found in the skin of fruits, in the leaves, flowers, barks, roots and in the resins of numerous plants and trees.

The essences are considered the vital-life force of the plant and they play very important and diverse roles in its survival. They influence growth and production, attract pollinating insects, repel predators and they protect the plant itself from disease both internally and externally.

The essences can be extracted from the plants by different methods, the most known being distillation. Once the essence is extracted from the plant it is called an Essential Oil.

Some properties of Essential Oils are:

 - A complex chemistry. Essential Oils consist of hundreds of components of carbon, such as terpenes, esters, aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, phenols and oxides. It is for this reason that one oil can help in a wide variety of disorders.

- They dissolve easily in oils and alcohol but not in water.

- They evaporate at different rates.

- They are not greasy.

- They are antiseptic.

More to come - stay tuned!
