Holiday Butt
It happens every year, millions of unsuspecting people wake up on new year's day, still intoxicated from turkey and holiday cookies, only to discover that they have all come down with the same affliction: holiday " butt-itis". It is estimated that the average person gains anywhere from 6 to 10 lb over the holiday season. To make matters worse, most people never take that weight off. So this year instead of starting the New Year three steps back, I am going to give you some strategies for avoiding the dreaded holiday butt. No one wants to feel deprived, especially around the holidays and you don't have to, just party more consciously.
· Instead of eating huge portions of everything, have small portions of everything and save the moderate portion for your favorite food. That way you won't feel like almost everything is off limits and you can't have any fun.
· Don't go to the party starving. People have the mistaken impression that if they starve themselves before the party, they will be able to clean out the entire buffet. This could not be farther from the truth. Your body knows when you are trying to starve it and it repays you by slowing down your metabolism even more. Best strategy eat leaner meals, don't skip any and have a snack before the party and you will actually enjoy the food more and make better choices. (Good snack choice before a party is soup)
· Be aware of the size of the portions you are eating. For example nuts at a party always seem like a good choice until you find out that a portion of nuts is barely ¼ cup depending on the nut and if they are cooked in oil the portion becomes even smaller. So if you are not careful you could blow the whole meal by eating your weight in nuts. The same applies to cheese. A portion size for cheese is a 1inch cube.
· Good choices for foods that are filling, yummy and waist friendly are; smoked salmon, shrimp, raw veggies and fruit, hummus, guacamole, olives, scallops and salsa just to name a few.
· Steer clear of, (or at least limit), foods that are breaded, deep-fried, soaking in mayo or wrapped in pasty.
· Watch the alcohol consumption. People forget to include the caloric load of alcohol. To illustrate the point, I had a client that decided his only treat for the holidays was to have 2 beers per day and for the rest eat the same as usual. By new years he had gained 6lb of belly fat.
· Manage your stress by making appointments with yourself. During those appointments do things that nourish your soul as well and relax the mind. For example, drop in yoga or meditation class, manicure/pedicure, facial, massage, take your neighbor's dog for a walk or even a nap if that is what you need.
· Speaking of naps make sure that you are getting your sleep 7-9 hours per night. People who get proper sleep are thinner. Need I say more?
In conclusion remember to eat mindfully and consciously and you won't feel deprived.
Happy Holidays To All!

Holiday Hangover Cure
Just wanted to share with all of you a little about one of my favorite holiday remedies. Also known as the hangover remedy, Nux Vomica (or Colubrina) is a life saver to avoid the morning after blues.
This remedy is not only amazing for avoiding and treating hangovers, it's also a standard for heartburn, or any discomfort brought upon by stuffing ourselves silly with rich foods. I recommend having a 30C of this remedy handy. If you're going on a bender take the remedy once during your binge and once before hitting the sheets, and if needed in the morning as well.
Have fun growing your holiday butt this season!
