Program Update
Happy 2012 to all! It looks like winter has finally arrived in Wisconsin making this a great time to look ahead to spring semester. We have extensive programming that will take place all over the metro area in the first months of 2012 and we look forward to getting as many new and returning volunteers involved as possible. If you have not presented yet this school year, please consider the opportunities detailed in the section below and let Volunteer Coordinator Kathy Weinberg-Kinsey know you are ready to get involved.
RSVP now for volunteer training: Feb 8, generously hosted by Heartland Advisors Inc. (789 N. Water St. Milwaukee, WI 53202) from 12pm to 1:30pm. The format for this training will be a question and answer session and will focus primarily on presenting effectively, managing classroom challenges, and engaging today's youth. Volunteers interested in attending must RSVP by Feb 1 and are asked to please review training video and classroom materials (linked here), and submit questions and topics you would like addressed at training to Program Manager, Dan Schiller (dan@makeadifferencewisconsin.org) prior to Feb 8.
Note: Lunch will be provide by Heartland Advisors Inc.

Volunteer Opportunities!
We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to present for the following:
*PRIORITY*
25 talkative students who require an enthusiastic volunteer to engage the class.
- Class 1 Dates: Wednesdays beginning January 25th (Jan. 25, Feb. 1, Feb. 8, Feb. 15, Feb. 22, & Feb. 29)
- Class 1 Time: 12:25pm - 1:18pm
- Class 2 Dates: Thursdays beginning January 26th (Jan. 26, Feb. 2, Feb. 9, Feb. 16, Feb. 23 & Mar. 1)
- Class 2 Time: 2:07pm - 3:00pm
*PRIORITY*
- Dates: Wednesdays beginning Jan. 30th (Jan. 30, Feb. 6, Feb. 13, Feb. 27, Mar. 5 & Mar. 12)
- Class Times & Student Info.
- 10:34am - 11:29am - a generally respectful, talkative class of around 25 students
- 1:57pm - 2:49 p.m. - a small class of 15 students who drift a little but actively participate
Mixed grade special education classes. Patient and compassionate volunteers needed to work with youth in these classes.
- Dates: Six consecutive Thursdays beginning any week from Feb. 2nd through Feb. 23 (program to end no later than Mar. 29)
- Class Times & Student Info:
- 10:23am - 11:16am; 15-20 enthusiastic and talkative students
- 1:47am - 2:40am; 10 students many with lower reading levels and one student who has partial hearing loss
8 sections of Citizenship classes. Bay View requires enthusiastic volunteers willing to work with challenging student groups and who are flexible and confident in their ability to engage.
- Dates: 6 consecutive weeks beginning the week of February 6 (day of the week is flexible and TBD by teacher and vols; same day preferred for all classes)
- Class Times:
- 9:00am - 9:51am (2 Classes)
- 9:55am - 10:46am
- 10:50am - 11:41am
- 11:45am - 12:36pm
- 12:40pm - 1:30pm
- 1:14pm - 2:05pm
- 3:04pm - 3:55pm
Sophomore level US History classes; because of the size of these classes (potential for up to 40 students) and the fact that Vincent serves many at-risk students these are good opportunities for volunteer pairs and volunteers who are open to more challenging groups.
- Dates: Feb. 6, 8, 10, 13, 15, 17
- Class Times:
- 9:11am - 9:59am
- 10:03am - 10:51am
- 11:47am -12:35pm

Classroom Preparation
Preparation speaks volumes; it facilitates a smooth delivery, bolsters confidence, and conveys to a class that you care. Please ensure that before any volunteer assignment, you review the updated presentations thoroughly and spend time familiarizing yourself with the new Prezi format and navigation of the program (detailed instructions linked here). The 2011-2012 presentations are now available online and are accessible (links below and can also be found on your volunteer login page linked here.)
