Program Update
The 2011-2012 school year is off to a phenomenal start, and in addition to reconnecting with many of our long-standing educational partners, we have some great new schools and programs we will be collaborating with this year. Burlington High School, Dottke High School, Home 4 The Heart, Milwaukee Excel High School, NOVA, Pathways to College, and Right Step are just some of the new partners we are excited to connect with in 2011-2012.
Our current volunteer training video and updated classroom presentations are now all available online. We strongly recommend that all volunteers spend some time getting familiar with the extensive changes to the classroom presentations (new presentation format, new look, updated activities, new information and handouts, videos added, etc.) before presenting in the classroom. Click HERE to view instructions for online training and presentation access. For our returning volunteers, changes to the program and presentations are listed HERE; please ensure that you are using the most up-to-date version of the Make A Difference - Wisconsin classroom curriculum when you connect with a class.
Volunteers, teachers, and students have been giving great reviews of the 2011-2012 program. The following are some of the comments we've received so far: "Loved it, huge improvement", "I love the flow of the new presentations", "They're really cool; I think kids feel like they are a part of the presentation", "The Prezi presentation is impressive, great improvement". As you get the opportunity to get out in the classroom, please keep us posted with your thoughts on the updates.
Thanks so much to those of you who have presented, are presenting, or are scheduled to present. For those who are still looking to get into a classroom this school year, we have ample opportunity on the horizon and look forward to getting you involved.

Volunteer Opportunities!
We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to present for the following:
Home 4 The Heart (3160 N 40th St., Milwaukee):
Girls group home looking for a strong female volunteer to work with a small group of teen girls as part of a life skills programming component. Programming will focus on concepts from the Make A Difference - Wisconsin curriculum most geared to independent living. Volunteer may opt to use handouts versus a computer presentation.
- Dates: Nov 10 & 17
- Time: 6pm - 7pm
South Division High School (1515 W. Lapham, Milwaukee)
South Division serves a student population consisting of many which are considered "at risk" and will likely be a challenging yet rewarding group for a volunteer to connect with.
- Dates: Nov 29, Dec 1, 6, 8, 13, & 15
- Time: 10:19am - 10:51am (shorter class, will skip surveying)
Wings Academy (357 E. Howard Ave., Milwaukee)
Wings is a charter high school established for students who may have struggled in other environments, possibly due to learning disability. Class will consist of Junior and Senior level students. Likely a challenging group, but teacher indicates that they are respectful students and with the right volunteer (patient, interactive, nurturing) will actively participate in programming.
- Dates: Nov. 30, Dec. 7, 14, 21, Jan. 4, & 11
- Time: 12:45pm - 1:51pm
If you are interested in presenting to any of the above mentioned, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Kathy Weinberg-Kinsey, email: kathy@makeadifferencewisconsin.org, phone: (414) 273-8101

Connections Beyond the Classroom
We have said again and again that our programming is the framework but volunteers are what drive learning. You make lasting impressions on students with your enthusiasm, experience, honesty and preparation, and sometimes this even goes beyond classroom instruction.
Shorewood High School Economics teacher, Jessi Braun and her students were treated to an exceptional experience coordinated by Make A Difference - Wisconsin volunteer Ted Stuckslager. Paired with Jessi's class last school year, Ted kept in touch following his presentations and assisted in making a summer class trip an experience to remember for students. Click HERE to read teacher Jessi Braun's reflection of the visit.
