Program Update It may be hard to believe (especially given the temperature and recent snow fall) but the spring semester is already upon us and as teachers finalize their lesson plans we are working to get schedules confirmed for financial literacy presentations in many classrooms.
This year we are excited to have added several schools in and around the Milwaukee metro area to our constantly growing list of partners; University School, Connects Learning Center, and Sussex Hamilton (note: volunteers needed for Sussex Hamilton in March, click here for details) are just a few. It's great to see educators from a wide variety of schools with incredibly diverse student populations understanding the need for basic financial education.
As noted in the left column of this Monthly Minute, spring semester volunteer training is scheduled and it is being offered in a slightly different format than it has been in the past. Rather than the standard 6pm - 9pm delivery, the upcoming training will take place during 3 consecutive days (Feb 14, 15, & 16) and will be presented over the lunch hour (12pm - 1pm). Heartland Advisors Inc. has generously donated space for training in their downtown Milwaukee office as well as lunch all three days for all those who attend. Those who have not previously participated in a training are encouraged to and if you are aware of others who may be interested in getting involved please have them contact Make A Difference - Wisconsin for details (RSVP required for those interested in attending).
In other news, some volunteers who have had the opportunity to get out in classes to present this past semester have reported that the new PowerPoint background on some program slides appears dark and is difficult to read. We have looked into this and it seems to be a format compatibility issue impacting classes that are using an older version of PowerPoint. If this is an issue that you run into please let us know. New CDs are being distributed with PowerPoints offering both colored and blank backgrounds; blank background slides will appear consistently in all versions of PowerPoint.
Thanks to your efforts, the 2010/2011 school year is going incredibly well and the spring semester promises to offer more opportunity to connect with a large and diverse group of students and schools!

Tips from the Classroom

Student "Sign-Up"
Please note that added to your volunteer folders and presentation materials this year is a student sign-up form for distribution and collection at some point during your time in a class. Students should be informed that names and contact information will be used exclusively by Make A Difference - Wisconsin to provide additional money management tips, follow-up communication, and a continued connection to resources beyond the classroom. |
