Purses Growing in Number and Size

By Pat Beldon, WLI President

Betsy and Pat

WLI Chair, Pat Beldon
(right) and Founder Betsy Torrence (left)

We at WLI often talk about the Power of the Purse -and for each of us this has a different meaning.  Among the obvious is the value of the money therein, but, as women, we know our purses represent much more - this is our toolbox and each of us carries and uses different tools in making her way (and the way for others) over, under and through the challenges of life.  As members of WLI, we have - and can share with the community - the variety of tools, talents and treasure in our purses to aid women and children as they build, fill and share the purses of their future world.

2010 - 2011 has been a great year for assembling purses.

· We've added 42 to our member roles this campaign year, bringing our total to...

· 118 members (a record!)

· We have met and exceeded our fundraising goal of $104,000, raising over $109,000 in memberships alone.

This means:

· we will continue to fund our current (and final) cohort of women working in early childhood education and earning their BA degrees

· we will continue to support reading enhancement programs at Central Elementary School in Allentown

· and we can anticipate future growth in both members and dollars to support the
educational needs of the youth who are our future and the future of our community

Thank you, each and every one of you.  All who give and all who bring other purses to our power.

JanelleVolunteer Opportunities at

Central Elementary

Central Elementary in downtown Allentown is one of several schools where children are especially at risk for failure. That's why WLI has chosen Central as one of our Signature Projects - to help improve the chances of success there. As you know, reading at grade level by the third grade is a critical factor, therefore efforts to help families develop reading skills is essential.

Book Blasts are evening family classroom events geared to motivate and assist family literacy. Please help us make the last two Book Blast evenings at Central a success. We need:

· volunteers to assist teachers in facilitating the reading-training sessions

· gift bags/baskets given as door prize incentives to enhance attendance

Dates: Thursday, May 12 and Thursday, June 2, 6:00 to 8:00 pm. To volunteer or offer a gift basket/item, contact Pat Beldon (pbeldon@ptd.net). We ask that the gift baskets have items that encourage creative family activities, books and craft items are always welcome.

WLI funded a program offered by the Banana Factory helping children "to find their voice" through photography and journaling by giving each child a camera to "capture their world". Here is our featured photo by Chanaly.

What is the impact of programs like these? Here is a comment from a parent about the impact the programming had on their child:

One mom writes,
"She is doing really good, especially in reading... She's reading words at home that really surprise me...At first when she was struggling to read, she was really negative about herself and feeling down about her reading abilities. her attitude and self-confidence have been really built up by the program"
