Volunteer Opportunities at
Central Elementary School
PTA Game Night: Thursday, February 3, 2011 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Families will select a board game to play with during the event and they will be able to take it home. Our goal is to promote strong family relationships. As a Community School, we want to ensure the social and emotional wellbeing of all of our students. This is important because 93% of our families live below the poverty line and struggle to create home environments that support those strong family relationships. Thanks to Sue Jones and the Lehigh Valley Hospital for providing the board games that will be presented to the families. If you want to volunteer during this event, please do not hesitate to contact Yadira Castanon. It will be a great opportunity to get to know our wonderful families. We are in need of snacks and drinks.
Walking School Bus We are working on the Walking School Bus concept. Last year a study on Safe Routes to School for Central Elementary School was made by the Center for Nutrition and Activity Promotion at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital and Pennoni Associates Inc. They presented us with a group of recommendations to improve certain routes to make them safer for children to walk to school. Mrs. Price and I met with Mrs. Ronald D. Penrose , the Traffic Control Superintendent, from the Bureau of Traffic Planning & Control last Wednesday, January 12 to discuss the study results. It was a very informative meeting and we learned a lot about what we can do and how the city can help us to implement certain parts of the plan. We will be presenting some more information in our next Community Partners Meeting. We will need the collaboration of parents, administrators, and community partners to be able to carry on this project.
Other Needs: Food Bank Our food bank is in need of toiletries, women hygiene items, detergent, and shampoo.
Health Clinic Jenna Wilson, our school nurse, brought to our attention that the health room is in great need to sweat pants, size 8-10, to give out to the children when they have an accident at school. She is also in need to socks. Good News! Bethlehem Christian School is holding a socks drive for Central.
Thanks to all of you for your support to Central Elementary children and families. Your dedication makes a great difference in their lives.

WLI funded a program offered by the Banana Factory helping children "to find their voice" through photography and journaling by giving each child a camera to "capture their world". Here is our featured photo by Central Elementary School student Talysha.
What is the impact of programs like these? Here is a comment from a parent about the impact the programming had on their children:
· Mom 1: "After taking the class, she seems more focused, especially with regard to her behavior. Now she is much more thoughtful and deliberate with her actions." |
