Greetings!
District 9 Budget Town Hall with Mayor Lee
As the City of San Francisco faces its fifth year of significant deficit, Supervisor David Campos and Mayor Ed Lee hosted a District 9 Budget Town Hall to get input directly from community members on ways of preserving critical services while balancing the budget. Key points discussed included preserving the social safety net, exploring multi-year budgeting and programming, and guarding against one-size-fits-all cuts for vital programs. Mission Local covered the story in this article. For more information about the budget process and key department hearing dates, please visit the Budget Committee's budget information website.
Making sure our waste disposal contract is the best deal for SF
Before the Board of Supervisors decides on a 10-year, $112 million contract for the city's waste disposal, Supervisor Campos wants to ensure that the City and its residents are getting the best deal possible. In March, he asked the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCo) to survey how other Bay Area cities procure waste collection, hauling, and disposal. The LAFCo survey, to be completed in April, will help the Board of Supervisors make an informed decision before committing valuable City resources.
Protecting historic signs Supervisor Campos heard from many constituents in Bernal Heights about your desire to preserve a historic Coca Cola sign at 601 Tompkins Street. In March, Supervisor Campos introduced legislation to streamline the application process for all historic signs and clarify the definition of historic sign. The legislation will be heard by the Planning Commission and the Historic Preservation Commission before coming to the Land Use & Economic Development Committee in a couple of months.
Comparing our health care costs with those of other regions Recent news coverage reports that hospital costs in Northern California are significantly higher than costs in Southern California and that a cause for the price differential could be a lack of competition in Northern California. Supervisor Campos has called for a hearing in the Government Audit and Oversight Committee on Thurs, April 28 at 10am in City Hall, Committee Room 263, to better understand the situation in Northern California. The hearing will focus on the trends and drivers of hospital costs in the San Francisco Bay Area, how the costs of services at different hospitals compare to one another, and whether there is a relationship between quality of care and costs.
Holding City departments accountable for overtime costs As chair of the Government Audit and Oversight Committee, Supervisor Campos will be holding a hearing to discuss the budgetary overtime costs the City is incurring from the largest departments and largest users of overtime, and to identify strategies to limit overtime overruns. Join us on Thurs, April 14 at 10am in City Hall, Committee Room 263, or watch the hearing on SFGTV.
