Amazing Grace is My Family By Mary Schmitz, Development Director
In 2008, Mike Cockerham found himself alone with nowhere to sleep. It was cold outside. "When I walked in to the CHUM Center," Mike explained, "I was anxious about how I would be treated." Mike asked if he could have a place to sleep. The CHUM Emergency Shelter staff asked no questions but welcomed him.
CHUM staff supported Mike by helping him find housing, providing meals and food and eventually helping him find a job. The Employment Counselor encouraged him to look for work. After applying to a local restaurant, Mike received a call. The job was his! "I needed clothes for work," he beamed, "so CHUM helped with shoes as well as bus passes and even an alarm clock." That job lasted 9 months before "I went back to the bottle." Following a few more months of homelessness, Mike noticed a poster about chemical dependency treatment in the CHUM Center. After treatment Mike was ready to return to work.
"I waited my whole life for this job," Mike told me as we visited at Amazing Grace Caf & Bakery. "People are happy to see me here. I feel important; they are my family now." Mike works washing dishes and claims that every dish in the place has been hand rubbed with love, by him. Working only 15 hours a week in the slow season means he still needs a bit of help from time to time so he stays in touch with Mark Engebretson, CHUM's Employment Counselor. "Mike is pretty independent," Mark shared. "He stops in for a bus pass to get to work or to add a few minutes on his cell to keep in touch with his employer."
Mike claimed he never really had any aspirations for his life, but he has some now. "I am starting to write some songs about my life. I am going to stand up at Open Mic, soon, and sing one." He also hopes to skydive one day. And I believe he will.

Barriers to Employment By Mary Schmitz, Development Director
According to Mark Engebretson, CHUM's Employment Case Manager, there are many barriers keeping people who are homeless from gaining employment. The most prevalent include:
Transportation: Between October 2010 and March 2011, Mark began working with 56 new people. Of those, 5 have a driver's license and 3 own a vehicle. It is not just about the lack of driver's license, but also the cost to pay past fines. Others have had their driver's license revoked. "To get a pizza delivery job" Mark explained, "requires a driver's license."
Lack of computer or technical skills: Some employment seekers have no computer skills and struggle even to complete online applications. Even entry level jobs at large retailers have applications with 80 or more questions.
Criminal history: The greatest barrier is for those with a criminal record. Having been charged, even if not convicted, can eliminate a person from a cleaning job at a hospital facility.

At a Crossroads
By Jim Soderberg, Executive Director
The faith traditions represented in CHUM stress the importance of community and the nurturing of values and commitments that make for community. Indeed, the quality of our relationships, especially with those who suffer poverty or marginalization, is held up as a barometer of the health of our relationship with God.
Our collective space both reflects and shapes the contours of our souls. What makes the current political environment so painful is the debasement of the commons through the interjection of fear, hatred, and resentment into our public discourse. As ties of mutual support and responsibility are broken, the commons becomes a hellish domain where we meet our neighbor with dread and mistrust.
As people of faith we are called to enter the public arena as, in the words of Isaiah, repairers of the breach and restorers of the streets to live in. We are called to invest ourselves in building a just and compassionate community. We are at a critical crossroads. At both the federal and state levels budgets are now being drawn up that will impact the lives of millions of people for years to come. The decisions these budgets embody are a concrete expression of our deepest values and commitments. They testify to who or what we truly worship.
To live our faith is to engage in the work that being community requires. Let us do so prayerfully, with humility and courage. And let us carry the message of compassion and hope that is so central to our collective work here at CHUM. In the days ahead please share with your neighbors and our policy makers the need to invest our collective resources towards the goal of creating the community that we are called to be.

Annual Report Finances & Statement
The charts below are based on CHUM's FY '10 audit report (7/1 to 6/30). However, two things should be noted. The expense chart includes depreciation (not a cash expense) and the revenue chart does not include grants received in FY '09 for FY '10 program expenses. CHUM showed a cash operating balance of $27,730 at the end of the fiscal year and our reserves increased by $19,052.
