NationalNightOut

Celebrate National Night Out with CHUM and our neighbors August 3, 2010, with a picnic, music and community!

Interested in helping out by providing food or volunteers? Contact Max at 218-720-6521.
Greetings!
The work of CHUM happens not only due to a competent, skilled staff but also due to the commitment of a cadre of  volunteers who are highly skilled or  willing to perform mundane tasks.  What ever a volunteer's role at  CHUM, they help  provide the services our clients are seeking.

From January  1 to March 30, 2010,  nearly 250 different individuals volunteered more than 3,500 hours.  Most of these volunteers come
through their congregations. Not included in these numbers are  the  hours volunteers  spend collecting food and other items to donate to CHUM.  Many congregations do this on a weekly or monthly basis.

Another way folks volunteer is through special events or projects such as Grandma's Marathon runners who  gather pledges to  raise money for the Gabriel Fund.  (See Gabriel Fund article below.)

The Rhubarb Festival, coming up on June 26th from 9 AM to 4 PM, promotes awareness of CHUM's work and  creates community while raising funds.  This event would not be possible without the involvement of  31 member congregations and hundreds of   volunteers.

THANK YOU to all of you who CONTRIBUTE TO CHUM whether you give of your time , talent and/or treasure.

I hope to see you at the Rhubarb Festival!  Have a safe and enjoyable summer...

Gabriel Fund - Helping People Get on Their Feet
The CHUM Gabriel Fund is a small emergency fund available to help our low-income neighbors during a time of crisis.  Here are some of their stories:

A young mother was pregnant with twins but did not have a bed when her doctor prescribed bed rest.  The Gabriel Fund collaborated with other area agencies to provide her with a bed. She has since had healthy twin boys.

Steve came to CHUM when his mother, who was living in a nursing home in Minneapolis, died.  He had no means to get to his mother's funeral.  A bus ticket  got Steve to the funeral.  He was grateful for the small amount of assistance
the Gabriel Fund could afford him.

Stella had an infected tooth for weeks. Her infection was so bad it was difficult
understanding her when she called for help. She requested funding to assist with the cost to see her dentist.  The Gabriel Fund provided what she needed to receive the necessary dental care.

The Gabriel Fund is replenished through the
 Grandma's Marathon Fundraiser!

Gabriel RunningIf you are running Grandma's please consider:
- Collecting sponsorships and donate them to the  Gabriel Fund.
- Encouraging your friends who run to be involved.
 - Asking your Congregation members to support  your efforts.

If you are not running, please consider:

-Being a volunteer for the CHUM water stop from either 6:15-10AM or 10AM-1:30PM
- Sponsoring a runner or sending a contribution directly to the Gabriel Fund.

Congregations Make It Happen

Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer
As you drive by the CHUM permanent housing building, RUAH, in the next few weeks things might look a bit different! Trinity Lutheran and Gloria Dei Lutheran Church have partnered with the families living at RUAH to create a safe backyard. The families and congregations have worked hand in hand to build a garden, plant two fruit trees and soon will be putting up a fence. Thank you to all both congregations for all your hard work.

Volunteers from Family of God Lutheran Church have been working diligently to freshen up CHUM facilities. For the last few months a group of FOG women has been cleaning one Wednesday a month. The women's shelter was recently  scrubbed wall to wall. Their next project is cleaning up after the construction dust settles in the remodeled CHUM Center. Thank you FOG volunteers for your work.
