CHUM Provided Hope
My name is Velvet, I lived in an abusive relationship for 15 years. I know it sounds crazy but when you don't see your alternatives there isn't any hope.
Eventually I realized I had to go somewhere new to live, away from my abuser. I had faith that I was doing the right thing when we found the CHUM Emergency Shelter. We were provided a place to sleep and the staff support to help me keep my family together. At meals we had our own family table.
I met with Mary Lu, the CHUM Family Housing Advocate, every day. She helped me identify the steps I needed to take to provide a good, stable home for my children.
With Mary Lu's, help my kids were enrolled in school where my high school aged daughter was the manager for the girls' basketball team and works as an office cadet. My twin boys attend a middle school where they played football. They're all doing well in school. We moved to the battered women's shelter but Mary Lu continued to help us find permanent housing. The CHUM Food Shelf volunteers helped me pick nutritious items my kids would eat.
Once in an apartment, Jewel, the CHUM Employment Advocate, helped me find a job, which I have had now for over a year. It feels so good to make my own money. For the first time in my life, I have money in the bank and I believe I can help my children have a better life. Thank you CHUM for providing me with HOPE!

Why CHUM Organizes Jim Soderberg, Executive Director
Last year when the news broke that General Assistance Medical Care (GAMC) was to be cut from the Governor's budget alarm spread throughout CHUM. Many of the over 2,000 people a year who access CHUM Center and Emergency Shelter services have disabilities and GAMC is their health care lifeline.
Because of CHUM's close relationship with many directly affected by this proposal it fell to us to take the lead in mobilizing a community response. Months of education and organizing followed as clergy, faith based communities and community members, including GAMC recipients, sent the message that Minnesotans are not willing to sacrifice their most vulnerable neighbors in an effort to balance the state budget.
CHUM's organizing activities are probably one of the most controversial and least understood aspects of our work. People know what it means to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, or heal the sick. But it is more difficult to understand how some people are cut off from accessing adequate nutrition, housing, or health care. Unfortunately, the need for CHUM's charitable work is grounded in the inadequacies of the systems that provide for these necessities.
CHUM volunteers see this connection and become the most effective advocates. Through relationships with those seeking CHUM services their sense of community becomes more inclusive. They begin to see our society through the eyes of those who are disabled or mentally ill, who are temporarily or permanently unemployable, or who don't have the money to purchase even the necessities of life. With such realization begins the ongoing work of creating a community that works for all of us.
Community members and GAMC recipients worked together to save GAMC.

In March, CHUM received the Steve Chadwick Award from the Northern Communities Land Trust for dedication to organizing and advocating for our community's low-income population. The Chadwick Award is presented to individuals and organizations who carry forth the organizing and advocacy work that Steve would be working on if he was still with us.

CHUM Community Organizer Allen Richardson, Congregational Outreach Director Elizabeth Olson, and Executive Director Jim Soderberg accept the award from Jeff Corey, Northern Communities Land Trust Executive Director.

Families in Crisis Face Barriers By Mary Lu Larson, CHUM Family Housing Advocate and Veronica Gaidelis-Langer, CHUM Housing Advocate
As the number of homeless families continued to rise by 21% over the past year, CHUM has extended its work of removing barriers families face once the housing crisis has passed. This continuation of Housing Advocacy Services supports families in their quest to maintain housing stability.
Barriers have not changed over time but families now present with multiple issues making the resolution of homelessness more difficult. Personal barriers like persistent mental health issues require long term intervention. Income barriers include lack of employment, education, transportation and affordable child care. Tenant screening includes factors like prior evictions, lack of references, lack of or poor rental history, unpaid rent or utility bills, lack of or poor credit history, and criminal history.
Currently a typical household in Emergency Family Shelter is likely to present up to 8 barriers compared to 2 or 3, two years ago. And more households have criminal histories impacting their ability to become employed and housed.
The housing struggle is intensified by the inability to find affordable housing appropriate to family size in an environment where available housing subsidies are decreasing because households are staying on these programs longer.
When Brenda and her family moved from CHUM's Emergency Family Shelter to their apartment, they were thrilled but also knew they must continue to work on the barriers that endangered the family's stability. Brenda was glad to know a CHUM Housing Advocate would continue to support her efforts.
