Greetings!  
 
 CHUM's 6th Annual Rhubarb Festival will happen on Saturday, June 26th from 9 AM to 4 PM. We hope you can join in the excitement of the day as there is something for the everyone in the family!
 
Starting at 9 AM there will be Rhubarb pies and treats to eat in or take home.  Rhubarb Lemonade, T-shirts and Children's Games. The Silent Auction opens at 9AM too.
 
The Stage Show will beginning at 10 AM. Besides musical performers, Lise Lange-Larson will tell stories, Ellie Schoenfeld will read poetry and the final judging of the Rhubarb Lovers Recipe Contest will be held.  New this year is a Junior Rhubarb Chefs category for cooks under 18.  All submissions are due in the CHUM office by June 11th.  See the Rhubarb Festival link for more details.
 
In the mean, time if you or your neighbors or friends have rhubarb to harvest you can start now.

  NEW CHUM FOOD SHELF HOURS

Beginning June 1, 2010, food distribution hours for working households will switch from Monday to Wednesday - 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the East Food Shelf, 120 N 1st Ave W. Anyone who are unable to access the Food Shelf during operating hours can make an appointment to receive service by calling 727-2391.

Rhubarb Festival Volunteer Opportunities

Harvest and Chop Rhubarb 

Harvest rhubarb in your neighborhood then chop and freeze it in 4-cup portions. Rhubarb is up early this year so you can start as soon as it is ripe and keep on harvesting.  All Rhubarb, fresh or frozen, can be delivered to First Lutheran Church starting on June 21st. Or to your congregation if they are baking for the Festival.

 

Donate Canning Jars

 We need ½ pint and quart canning jars and rims and lids. 
  
If you wish to sign up to volunteer the day of the Festival

Gabriel Fund Marathon Fundraising

 

Gabriel RunningThe CHUM Gabriel Fund is a small emergency fund available to help low-income people in our community.  Funds are generated through the Annual Marathon Fundraiser. You are invited to help!

 

If you are running Grandma's please consider;

Collecting sponsorships for your run and donate them to the Gabriel Fund.

Encourage your friends who run to be involved.  Ask your Congregation members to support your efforts.

 

If you are not running, please consider;

Being a volunteer for the CHUM water stop from either 6:15-10AM or 10AM-1:30PM

Sponsoring a runner or sending a contribution directly to the Gabriel Fund.

Family Shelter can use a NEW toddler car seat; electric alarm clocks; body lotion and deodorant; baby hygiene products like , diapers sized 3, 4, 5, baby shampoo and soap.  
 
The Food Shelf; Volunteer needed to pack food orders and/or interview clients for Supplemental Food Program for Working Households - East Food Shelf [120 N. 1st Ave. W.] Wednesday, 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Can come weekly or once a month, for all or part of the 3-hour shift.To Volunteer; Contact Meg at 727-2391or chumfs@chumduluth.org.
 
AmeriCorps Volunteers Needed: CHUM is now accepting applications for 450-hour and 300-hour AmeriCorps member slots to be completed by August 30th 2010.  Coordinated by Duluth LISC, these positions offer the opportunity to learn valuable community organizing skills. AC members will recruit, train and manage volunteers while door-knocking rental properties across Duluth. Internship credit is also available.

 

Members will provide rental counseling services to low and moderate income residents and identify landlord-tenant problems. Members will help establish Renters Associations in Duluth as part of a multi-agency collaborative effort to foster livable, safe and healthy environments. These AmeriCorp members will receive a stipend of up to $1250 towards student loan payments(300 hour-$1000, 450 hour- $1250) as well as a modest cash stipend. Renters Association Meetings

Lincoln Park Renters Association will meet Tuesday, May 18that5:30 PM at the Harrison Community Center (3002 West 3rd Street). Dinner is provided as well as transportation from Midtown Manor.

 

Hillside Renters Association will meet Thursday May 20th  at 6 PM  at the Central Hillside Community Center (12 E 4th Street.)  Guest Speaker, Michael Dahl from MN HOMELine will discuss Tenant Bill of Rights. Dinner is provided as well as transport available from Lincoln Park.
