Edwin Outwater: conductor to the rescue!

Edwin Outwater

When American conductor Edwin Outwater got the call to conduct for the world premiere of Gabriela Lena Frank's Holy Sisters with the Berkeley Symphony a mere two days before the concert, his only opportunity to study the score was on the plane ride out to California ("Thank God for the iPad!" he joked in a pre-concert talk). Outwater, who is known for his ability to conduct both standard concert fare and new music with ease, did not fail to deliver on the premiere. Praise poured in from the San Francisco Chronicle and the San Jose Mercury News, while the San Francisco Classical Voice wrote: "Outwater's arrival didn't just save the day. His vigorous and focused approach effected an outstanding set of performances from the Symphony players, and evidenced that he's headed for a top-tier future."

In his role as music director of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony (KWS), Outwater is dedicated to expanding the orchestra's core audience through groundbreaking collaborative projects, frequently creating special programs that look at music's relationship with very different topics, such as food and wine, neurology, and quantum physics. Stefan Jackiw: a return to the CSO
JackiwJeans

After his recent "sublime performance" of Bruch's Scottish Fantasy, rising star violinist Stefan Jackiw reprises the work for his Atlanta Symphony Orchestra debut under Nicholas McGegan this week (May 24-26). Chicago audiences will also soon have the chance to hear Jackiw when he joins American pianist Jeremy Denk at the city's Symphony Center for "The Collaborative Pianist" (June 3): an innovative recital exploring the piano-player's role in intimate artistic partnerships. Later that week, Jackiw returns to the Chicago Symphony for two performances (June 7 & 8) of Beethoven's "Triple" Concerto with cellist Pavel Gomziakov, pianist Kristian Bezuidenhout, and conductor Trevor Pinnock.

Joyce Yang: playing with the masters

Yang new ATW

"Her attention to detail and clarity is as impressive as her agility," raved the Washington Post about pianist Joyce Yang's solo recital at Wolf Trap last month. This summer, the young pianist brings these impressive gifts to concerts with two of the greatest chamber ensembles of the last 50 years: the Guarneri Quartet and the Emerson String Quartet. On August 2, Yang joins members of the Guarneri Quartet to play Franck's Piano Quintet at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. Just a week later on August 11, Yang returns home to New York and the Mozart Mozart festival for a performance of Schubert's beloved "Trout" piano quintet with the Emerson String Quartet, preceded by a pre-concert solo piano recital featuring Bartók's Out of Doors at Alice Tully Hall.

Jessica Rivera: blooming in Atlanta

Rivera Jessica_ATW2 This spring, soprano Jessica Rivera brought "clarity and grace" to the world premiere of Gabriela Lena Frank's Holy Sisters with the Berkeley Symphony, gave a San Francisco Performances recital "rich in panache," and lent her "clear and agile voice" to the Boston Symphony's performance of Beethoven's Ninth under Bernard Haitink. Now, Rivera reprises the role of Kumudha, which she originated in the 2006 Vienna premiere, in a staged concert production of John Adams's A Flowering Tree with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra conducted by Robert Spano (June 7 & 9) before heading to Madrid's Teatro Real to star in a production of Osvaldo Golijov's Ainadamar.
