Stefan Jackiw: sublime Scottish Fantasy

JackiwJeans Violinist Stefan Jackiw has a knack of breathing new life into popular violin works, as demonstrated by his recent accounts of Bruch's Scottish Fantasy. With the Oregon Symphony, Jackiw "delivered a sublime performance," finding "that extra spark that allows an artist of the highest caliber to communicate with everyone who is listening as if he were playing only for each one of them individually." Likewise, with the Rochester Philharmonic, "his range of color was impressive." Jackiw will take his unique approach to Bruch's work to Atlanta on May 24, 25, and 26, when he makes his Atlanta Symphony Orchestra debut under Nicholas McGegan.

Kelley O'Connor: The Other Mary in LA

new Kelly shot

Recently praised for her
"beautiful and impressive voice," mezzo-soprano Kelley O'Connor explores a diverse range of music this spring; first in Bach's St. Matthew Passion with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Robert Spano (March 8 & 10), then in Mozart's Requiem at Carnegie Hall with the Orchestra of St. Luke's and Ivan Fischer (April 12), before returning to her native California, where she creates the title role in the world premiere of John Adams's new work, The Gospel According to the Other Mary, with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel (May 31 - June 3).

"To work with John Adams, Peter Sellars, Gustavo Dudamel, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic on one project is thrilling beyond words and a life-changing event," O'Connor explains. "Also, knowing that in working with these groundbreaking artists you will be asked to realize your own potential creates its own excitement."

The Knights: new CD, new tours, New York radio residency

Knights horizontal ATW

Young, exciting, New York-based orchestra The Knights is packing its bags for a tour of Germany this March. Teaming up with cellist Jan Vogler, the ensemble makes stops in Ludwigsburg (March 17-20), Munich (March 21), Dresden (March 22), Darmstadt (March 24), Cologne (March 25), and Düsseldorf (March 26).

The pace does not let up when The Knights return home to the US. April sees the orchestra's second term as Ensemble-in-Residence at New York's WQXR, the nation's most listened to classical music station, and the completion of the recently-announced Found Sound Project - a contest in which the public is invited to submit audio samples for The Knights' performance of John Adams's Christian Zeal and Activity at WQXR's Greene Space. On April 3, coinciding with the WQXR residency, The Knights release a new recording on the Ancalagon label, A Second of Silence, an album juxtaposing Schubert with works by Satie, Feldman, and Glass. After the WQXR residency, The Knights hit the road again on a ten-city US tour (April 5-20).
