Susanna Phillips to sing first Lucia
Susanna Phillips  Fresh from a summer residency at the Marlboro Music Festival, soprano Susanna Phillips just co-launched Twickenham Fest, a new chamber music festival for her hometown of Huntsville, Alabama.  Read her blog.  This season she portrays the title role of Lucia di Lammermoor for the first time, also in her native state, and this month she sings Gluck in Minnesota with countertenor David Daniels and conductor Harry Bicket.  Following two productions at the Metropolitan Opera, the 2010 recipient of the Beverly Sills Artist Award travels to Japan with the Met next June, singing Musetta in La Bohème with Anna Netrebko and Joseph Calleja.
  • Sept. 25-Oct. 3: Minnesota Opera; Orfeo ed Euridice (Euridice)
  • Dec. 21-Jan. 6: Metropolitan Opera; The Magic Flute (Pamina)
  • Jan. 31-Feb. 25: Metropolitan Opera; La Bohème (Musetta)
  • Mar. 18 & 20: Opera Birmingham; Lucia di Lammermoor (first Lucia)
  • Apr. 29-May 10: Boston Lyric Opera; A Midsummer Night's Dream (Helena)
  • June 2011: Metropolitan Opera - Japan tour; La Bohème (Musetta)
"Impressively gifted ... Ms. Phillips also proved herself in American song, winning a huge ovation for her impassioned performance of 'Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man' from Show Boat."
--The New York Times, 7/14/10 (on the Met Opera's Summer Recital Series in Central Park)

Joyce Yang on three continents with Edo de Waart
Joyce YangWhat a summer for pianist Joyce Yang!  She enjoyed a sustained standing ovation in her San Francisco Symphony debut, was called "brilliant" by the Chicago Tribune's John von Rhein for her "snazzy performance" with the Chicago Symphony and James Conlon at Ravinia, and "dazzled" with Leonard Slatkin in the Aspen Festival tent. This coming season, the 2010 Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient and Van Cliburn Competition silver medalist collaborates on three continents with conductor Edo de Waart in concerto appearances:
  • Sept. 25: Chopin Society of Atlanta; recital
  • Oct. 8-10: Milwaukee Symphony; Rachmaninoff Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with Edo de Waart, cond.
  • Oct. 25: Sydney Symphony; recital (Australia debut)
  • March 20: CAL Performances (Berkeley); recital
  • Apr. 7-16: Melbourne & Sydney Symphonies (Australia); Rachmaninoff Cto. 3 & Mozart Cto. K. 491 with Edo de Waart, cond.
  • Jun. 17 & 18: Hong Kong Philhmarmonic (China); Tchaikovsky Cto. with Edo de Waart, cond.
"Joyce Yang is more than a young pianist who can dazzle with sheer technique. What makes her special is what she does with the music. Sunday in the tent she tackled one of the most popular and familiar concertos in the literature, Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1, and created moment after moment that surprised a listener with a bit of extra musical insight."

Stefan Jackiw to reunite with Marin Alsop
Stefan Jackiw"The mood music my hotel in Seoul pipes into my bedroom is Beethoven Serioso quartet," tweeted violinist Stefan Jackiw from South Korea, where he's performing this week with the London Philharmonic and conductor Vassily Sinaisky.  Read Strings Twitter Tips article featuring Jackiw.  With his Brahms Sonatas CD (Sony) submitted for Grammy consideration, the 25-year-old violinist heads to Baltimore this month for a reunion with Marin Alsop, who led their Philadelphia Orchestra concert at the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival this past summer.
  • Sept. 30-Oct. 3: Baltimore Symphony; Mendelssohn Vln. Cto. with Marin Alsop, cond.
  • Jan. 20-22: Nashville Symphony; Sibelius Vln. Cto. with Mario Venzago, cond.
  • Feb. 19: London Philharmonic (UK); Mozart: Sinfonia Concertante with Yannick Nezet-Seguin, cond.
  • May 12 & 13: RTÉ National Symphony (Ireland); Sibelius Vln. Cto. with Hannu Lintu
  • May 19: Tampere Philharmonic (Finland); Mendelssohn Vln. Cto. with Hannu Lintu
  • June 17-20: Kansas City Symphony; Bruch Scottish Fantasy with Michael Stern, cond.
"Stupendous ... Mr. Jackiw has had a well-justified and meteoric rise to the top of the international music scene. Still in his mid-twenties, he has performed with almost every major orchestra in the world and has been compared to Issac Stern and Itzhak Perlman ... [His performance] will be spoken of in hushed tones by Bellingham classical music lovers in years to come."
--Entertainment News NW, 7/19/10 (on Mendelssohn Vln. Cto. at Bellingham Music Festival)
