Stefan Jackiw's season of debuts
Stefan JackiwThe new season is a great opportunity to discover why the Washington Post says Stefan Jackiw (jack-EEV) has "talent that's off the scale."  The 24-year-old violinist has already appeared with over a dozen top orchestras nationally and internationally, including the Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic and Cleveland Orchestra, and he makes his debut with half a dozen more in the coming months.  Also an avid chamber musician and recitalist, Jackiw played the season opening recital of the Harriman-Jewell Series in Kansas City and a pair of piano trio concerts in New York City in September.
  • Oct. 31 & Nov. 1: Oregon Symphony; Claus Peter Flor, cond. (Mozart: Violin Cto. No. 4)
  • Nov. 13 & 15: Pittsburgh Symphony debut; Andris Nelsons, cond. (Mozart: Violin Cto. No. 5)
  • Feb. 11 & 13: Seattle Symphony; Gerard Schwarz, cond. (Barber: Violin Cto.)
  • Feb. 18-20: Russian National Orchestra debut & tour to Davis, Berkeley & Cerritos, CA; Mikhail Pletnev, cond. (Tchaikovsky: Violin Cto.)
  • March 19 & 20: Cincinnati Symphony debut; Arild Remmereit, cond. (Bruch: Scottish Fantasy)
  • March 25-27: Philadelphia Orchestra debut; Sir Andrew Davis, cond. (Mozart: Violin Cto. No. 4)

Pablo Heras-Casado conducts from the UK to L.A.
Pablo Heras-Casado
Fresh from Japan with the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Spanish conductor Pablo Heras-Casado launched September with the Orchestre National de Bordeaux, conducted his debut with Zurich's Tonhalle Orchestra and returned to the Collegium Novum Zurich.  Earlier this month he led the orchestra at London's Royal Academy of Music, Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo in Monaco, and Klangforum Vienna in Parma, Italy. The versatile 31-year-old has a number of significant debuts in the coming months, culminating at the Hollywood Bowl: his re-engagement with the Los Angeles Philharmonic next summer.
  • Oct. 24: BBC Philharmonic debut; Manchester, UK (Mendelssohn, Dvorak, Beethoven)
  • Dec. 15: Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France (Schubert: Sym. No. 7 - DVD for Naïve)
  • Jan. 9: Orquesta Nacional de Espana debut; Spain
  • Feb-Mar.: English National Opera debut (L'Elisir d'Amore; Jonathan Miller, dir.)
  • Apr. 8 & 9: Danish National Symphony Orchestra;  (Nielsen, Chopin, Holst)
  • June-July: Welsh National Opera debut (Simon Keenlyside's first Rigoletto; James MacDonald, dir.)
  • July:  Hollywood Bowl debut; Los Angeles Philharmonic (all-Beethoven)

James Valenti's Met & Covent Garden debuts
James Valenti
As a preview for James Valenti's Met Opera and Covent Garden debuts as Alfredo this season, here's what a reviewer for Germany's Klassik.com wrote about Valenti's Deutsche Oper Berlin La Traviata this past spring: "Crisis? Which crisis?  It is always said there are no real tenors today, like the ones in the fifties and then suddenly you have a young man who looks like a cross between a top-conditioned athlete and George Clooney, has dark curls with a chiseled profile, moves on stage easily - and on top of that sings wonderfully well, produces warm, full tones, with a sonorous middle voice and blossoming, full ringing high notes."
  • Oct. 24: Opera National de Lyon; Grenoble, France (title role in Werther)
  • Nov. 1 & 3: Opera National de Lyon; Tokyo, Japan (Werther in concert)
  • March 6-14:  Minnesota Opera (Rodolfo in La Boheme)
  • March 29-April 4: Metropolitan Opera debut; NYC (Alfredo in La Traviata with Gheorghiu & Hampson)
  • May 29 -June 10: Vancouver Opera (Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly)
  • July 11-17: Royal Opera Covent Garden debut (Alfredo in La Traviata w/Gheorghiu)

Ann Arbor.com - 10/9/09 (Inon Barnatan review)
University Musical Society recital with cellist Alisa Weilerstein: "[There is] a unity of spirit between the two that far exceeds the notions of tight ensemble."

Chicago Sun-Times - 10/08/09 (Joshua Roman preview)
"Call him mello cello: online star returns to stage"
ABC-7 News, Chicago - 10/7/09
WTTW TV, Chicago - 10/7/09

Omaha World-Herald - 9/24/09 (Kirill Gerstein preview)
"Pianist Kirill Gerstein is touring the world with a trio of grizzly bears. Make that three utterly ferocious, feral piano concertos."

Neue Zurcher Zeitung - 9/22/09
(Pablo Heras-Casado review)
"Courage and willpower - these two characteristics distinguish the Zurich appearances by Pablo Heras-Casado... unwavering leadership skills."

Seattle Times - 7/31/09 (Stefan Jackiw review)
"I imagined that the legendary 19th-century recitals of violinist Joseph Joachim and pianist Clara Schumann - lifelong friends and fervent exponents of Brahms - couldn't have sounded better than Jackiw and [Jeremy] Denk."

News-Telegram, Dallas - 2/16/2009
(James Valenti review)
"There's a new hunk in town and the Dallas Opera has him... As Rodolfo, Valenti cuts a tall, dark, and handsome figure on the stage, as any leading man should. Think George Clooney with a voice that can melt your heart."
