A Message from the Board of Supervisors
|
Welcome to Currents, Chesterfield County's new e-newsletter for county residents and others who are interested in what is happening in our locality. The name is derived from the county's historic ties to the James River, and to the fact that the county seal depicts a flowing river at the foot of a coal miner. Previously, the county had published a Board of Supervisors newsletter twice each year, distributed in The Community Weekly. Faced with a challenging economy and reduced revenues, the Department of Public Affairs, which produced the newsletter, discontinued it and sought a more economical way to continue to provide important information to residents. Currents is cost-effective, and will be produced quarterly and provided to those who indicate that they'd like to receive it by visiting the county's website at chesterfield.gov and clicking the link to subscribe. Like earlier print versions, the e-newsletter will include countywide news, business news and news from each magisterial district, along with contact information for the Board of Supervisors, Planning Commission and School Board. We hope you enjoy Currents, and as always, we welcome your comments and suggestions.
Sincerely, Daniel A. Gecker Chairman Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors |
| Chesterfield County employees exceed United Way Goal |
Chesterfield County employees exceeded the $167,000 goal of this year's annual United Way campaign. Despite the challenging economy, employees met the challenge and have pledged $167,219 to date. The results are a clear indication that Chesterfield County employees care about helping to address the increased needs in our community. Chesterfield County is one of only a few localities to meet its goal this year. |

| Johanna Beers is 2010 Christmas Mother |
Each year, the Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Christmas Mother program selects one of its all-volunteer committee members to represent the program as the Christmas Mother. This year, the committee selected Johanna Beers, a six-year volunteer with the Christmas Mother, who served as volunteer chairman, coordinating the many volunteers who donate their time at the Christmas Center. "Through generosity and caring from individuals, businesses, churches, civic groups and schools, we can light up the eyes and put smiles on the faces of many children and seniors in our community this holiday season," Beers said. This year, the Christmas Mother is offering another way to make the holidays special for seniors and families in need. Christmas Mother trees have been set up at Wal-Mart locations in Chester, Colonial Heights and the Hull Street location near Route 288. Anyone wanting to participate can select a name from the tree, purchase the items listed for that person or family, and return them to the Wal-Mart location. The Christmas Mother tree in Colonial Heights lists seniors in need, the other trees list families in need. The Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Christmas Mother program is a nonprofit, charitable organization that was established in 1972 by Miss Lucy Corr, then superintendent of the Chesterfield County Welfare Department. The program's sole purpose is to assist with the special needs of families that are in need during the holiday season. For more information, or to sponsor a family, call 804-748-1183 or 751-4657. Donations may be mailed to Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Christmas Mother, P.O. Box 2500, Chesterfield, VA 23832.

| Don't let Ol' Man Winter surprise you |

Days of heat indices into the triple digits this past summer, as well as a few summerlike days this fall, have a way of making people forget about last winter, one of the worst in years. So, here's a reminder from Chesterfield County Emergency Management and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management about what county residents should be doing now to prepare for Ol' Man Winter: "Get a kit. Make a plan. Stay informed." "We don't have to let a winter storm or a cold snap take us by surprise," said Chesterfield County Emergency Management Coordinator Curt Nellis. "Following a few simple steps can prepare any household for the months ahead, and doing so will ensure your home is prepared for just about any disaster, whether it be a winter storm this January or a hurricane next July." Get a Kit. Include three day's worth of food, water (a gallon per person per day), a battery-powered and/or hand-crank radio and extra batteries, and your written family emergency plan. Add a first-aid kit, medications, if needed, blankets and warm clothing, supplies for any special member of your household, and items for your pet. Make a plan. Decide on a meeting place outside of your neighborhood if your family is separated and cannot return home because of closed roads. Choose an out-of-town relative or friend to be your family's point of contact for emergency communications. With your family, write down your emergency plan - a free worksheet and much more preparedness information is available at ReadyVirginia.gov. Stay informed. Before during and after a winter storm, listen to local media for information and instructions from emergency officials. Be aware of winter storm watches and warnings, as well as road conditions. Road information is available round the clock by calling 511 or visiting 511Virginia.org.
