"SMOKING IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO"
by Les Sigette, Wastewater Technician
smoker

Now before you start thinking to yourself this is the most ridiculous statement any normal person could ever make, realize I'm talking about smoking your sewer collection system not smoking cigarettes. As a former operator myself, I felt I was doing a pretty good job of maintaining the sewer system by flushing twice a year, but in reality I was only getting half the job done. How did I know if the customer's sewer was functioning properly? One way of checking is to smoke test the sewer main. A white, harmless smoke is forced up the resident's sewer and out the sewer vent located on the roof of the house. If the sewer ventilation is working properly a nice even stream of smoke will exit out the resident's sewer vent. If no smoke is seen, then further checking within the house is needed to determine why the sewer vent isn't functioning properly. If smoke is found in the house, this means deadly H2S gas could also be present. If a problem is found, call your local licensed plumber and have the defect fixed. Smoke testing can also be helpful to the city by finding areas of water infiltration such as open sewer pipes like those found in a trailer court, cracks or splits in the sewer collection system and lift-station problems. If your community would like to have some smoke testing done please feel free to call our office and arrange a time to do this type of project. The office number is 800-349-6951.
