Are you as confused by the weather as I am? Why does it seem to either be foggy or blowing a gale? According to the items on my calendar, we must be headed into summer, because things are awfully busy.
Have you registered for the golf tournament, yet? There are quite a few spots left for hole sponsors and players.
We also have a Habitat for Humanity Build project coming up. This house is dedicated to Chaplain Dick Eisemann and we need our membership to turn out and help!

Stormwater: Why Do We Care?
by Maria Tart

Do any of you question why there is so much talk about stormwater or do you see it as another reason to apply rules and regulations toward homebuilders and homeowners? I am sure most of us love all the water activities available on the

CrystalCoastand see the health of those waters as important. Stormwater runoff contains many pollutants such as sediment, trash, nutrients, bacteria, and organics that affect our waterway and our drinking water sources. None of us like to see these things going into our water causing cautions for potable water or closings for fishing, swimming, and other activities but the issue goes beyond the accumulation of toxins. With the decrease in natural hydrology we are seeing an increase in algal blooms and eutrophication, nuisance flooding, eroding and degraded streams, dry stream beds, and lack of groundwater recharge. The water is not only affected by the pollutants but runoff causes a rise in water temperature which also has an impact on life in and around these waters.

So what is the natural hydrologic cycle of an area before development? Areas and charts may vary but roughly the evapotranspiration level is around 40%, ground infiltration 50%, and runoff 10%. After development the hydrology changes decrease evapotranspiration to around 30%, infiltration drops significantly to 15% and runoff increases to upwards of 55%.
