Greetings!

A new school year brings changes to the whole community.  Covington Partners in Prevention took advantage of the summer to do strategic planning and to learn how to use tools for student success that will yield benefits for us all.  We hope you will be part of your community's support for its children by attending a meeting, joining one of our programs, or by making a donation to support the programs that are making a difference for Covington children.

Partnerships to Support Education
Covington Partners in Prevention has a new role as a clearinghouse, ensuring students get focused support for improving school achievement.Clearinghouse graphic

It only makes sense that all activities that take place in a school support the education of its students.  This year, Covington Partners in Prevention will be working with every organization that partners in our schools.  A new set of standards is in place to ensure that partnerships bring maximum benefit to the students, the community and the partners themselves.  Look for tips and information here in the months to come or contact Stacie Strotman, stacie.strotman@covington.kyschools.us or 859-392-3179, for more information.

Tip for a successful partnership:
Maintain student school achievement
as the highest priority.
Fundraising Focus
This month's donations came from individuals as well as from a collaborative venture with Kicks for Kids, who sponsored the River Run.  Volunteers from Covington Partners in Prevention supported this 5K Run/Walk and in return, Kicks for Kids made a sizeable donation to our cause.  Many thanks to them for sharing the benefits of their event!

Thanks also to those of you who have been using goodsearch.com to do your Internet searching.  Our initial goal of $20.00 from Internet searches has been reached!
From here on out, every penny will count, and with your help we will raise at least $50.00 of this "free money" by the end of the year.

We will get this money because caring community members set their search engines to
www.goodsearch.com, choose Covington Partners in Prevention as the charity they'd like to benefit, and then search the Internet just as usual.  Searches are performed by yahoo.com, and we will receive a penny for each and every one!  So if you haven't already done it, set your search preferences at work and at home and tell all your friends to do the same.  The children of Covington will benefit!

Match of the Month
Star Staubach, a mentor in Covington schools, is opening doors for her young friend, Brittany.
Star and Brittany, a 9th grade student at Holmes High School, celebrated their year anniversary as a mentoring match this summer.  Star and BrittanyStar and Brittany, part of the community-based mentoring program, have enjoyed fun trips to the zoo and Reds games over the last year.  But Star also helped Brittany explore her career interests by spending one of their mentoring sessions visiting a veterinarian's office.

After touring the animal hospital and talking to the veterinarian, Brittany was so excited that she decided to volunteer at the veterinary office.  "The vet also offered to let her shadow and visit his office while he performed surgeries," Star said. "Meeting the vet and touring the hospital was a real eye-opening experience for her."

It's that kind of one-on-one mentoring that makes a difference for students in Covington Independent Public Schools.

Make this Monday the Start of a New Healthier YOU!

Healthy Mondays

The national Healthy Monday effort has arrived in our community!  Let's treat Monday as the day to start or re-start healthy behaviors.  Each month we will include a Healthy Monday tip you can use.  Watch for additional activities throughout the city and schools that will help children and adults improve the health of our city.

Here's this month's tip:
Meatless Monday.  One day a week, cut out meat. In place of chicken, beef, pork or fish, just look for protein from beans, legumes, eggs, nuts and seeds instead. Going meatless once a week may reduce your risk of chronic preventable conditions like cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity.

Founded in 2005 in partnership with Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University and Syracuse University, Healthy Mondays is a national effort to create a movement of people and organizations who commit every Monday to behaviors and actions that will end preventable disease in the U.S.  In Covington, Healthy Mondays is sponsored by the Northern Kentucky Healthy Monday Coalition in collaboration with Covington Partners in Prevention.

Adults Help Youth through the Risky Business of Adolescence
Underage use of alcohol and tobacco, illegal drugs, the dangers of driving, sexual activity, and even just the pressures of school or the sports team.  It's scary out there.  By the time our communities' youth are in middle school, they're navigating a world that's hard for adults to even imagine having to deal with at these children's ages.

Where is your place in all this?
Research shows that parents and families, along with influential community members, are teens' best chance in this especially risky time. By taking a few simple steps, you can show youth the way to success.  Here are a few tips:
  • Guide.  Set expectations and rules.  Be specific and firm, but flexible, too.
  • Monitor.  "Plug in" to where they are, who they're with, and what they're doing.
  • Respect.  Stay involved, but give them privacy. Listen. Encourage opinions.
  • Be a Role Model.  Don't expect them to use common sense and follow the rules if you don't.

Invite a friend to be a MENTOR
Sometimes all it takes is a personal invitation for someone to take the step to become a mentor. Postcard with Border _small

Not everyone thinks that he or she can be a mentor, but we know that most adults do have what it takes.

Take the time to invite one friend to learn more about mentoring.  Ask us for a simple postcard that you can pass along.

To receive postcards to pass out to friends, contact Amy Weber at 859-392-3166.
Committee Connection
New committees will begin to meet at the next Coalition Meeting on August 11.  Please consider which committee you would like to join.

Mentor Recruitment
Why:  Data show that mentoring works.  Every school has a list of waiting students.

School Attendance
Why:  32% of Covington students do not finish a school year where they started it.  Yet, we know that when students stay in Covington schools, they perform better academically.

Youth Connections
Why:  The district's goal is for every child, before grade 4, to be connected to an activity beyond the hours of 8 am - 3 pm that will make a stronger connection to the school.  16% of students currently say that they are involved in a creative activity.

Community Wellness
Why:  39% of students are overweight or at-risk for becoming overweight.  Community parks are underutilized and healthy food options are hard for many families in Covington to get.

For more information about any committee, please contact Stacie Strotman, stacie.strotman@covington.kyschools.us or 859-392-3179.
