| Greetings!
At the Annual Meeting last month, we announced our March - September campaign to raise $150,000 through a series of fundraising events. It will wrap up Friday, September 25... hold that date for our big celebration of the progress of the past ten years and a look forward to our plans for the next ten years.
We hope that our new "Fundraising Focus" monthly article will inspire you to get involved! Remember that we all share the responsibility to support Covington children, and we share the joy when they do well.
Your support and involvement make it possible to bring services that help the youth of Covington succeed. Thank you for doing what you can do and giving what you are able to give! |
| Fundraising Focus: A Little Can Mean a LOT |
|
|
March marked the kickoff of the Fundraising Campaign. Our goal of $150,000 is a big one, but when we all do our part, we will get there!
Margaret Fifer was recognized at the Annual Meeting with an "Above and Beyond" award. Margaret showed her dedication to Covington Partners in Prevention and Covington children through anonymous monthly $5.00 donations for several years and by knitting warm hats and gloves for our annual winter drives. Now she has agreed to be identified as an example of what one person's contribution can mean.
That $5 can make a big difference in the relationship of a parent and child who finally take the time to sit down together and have a meaningful conversation about school work, teachers, friends or family issues, as they work on the $5 craft item.
Larger donations can multiply the effects to more children and are needed to support staff and other major program costs. But no matter what the size of the donation, we all must do our part to make Covington an even better place to grow up in, to live, and to work.
What would it take for YOU to donate what you can afford to Covington Partners in Prevention?
Every dollar counts, and even a little can mean a LOT! |
| Trailblazing |
|
|
Covington students from Holmes Junior/Senior High School and Two Rivers Middle School volunteered to make bike trails at Devou Park.
Covington students from Holmes Junior/Senior High School and Two Rivers Middle School helped build the first mile of what will soon be a ten-mile hiking and mountain biking trail in Devou Park. Twenty-four students dug, raked and cleared one mile of brush to grade (or level) the ground in preparation for paving.
Students were excited about doing their part in this project. It was hard work, but they were inspired and proud to be a part of constructing the first urban mountain bike trail in the area. They felt their own importance as responsible contributors to the community.
Partners in the event included the City of Covington, U-Give High, and Give Back Cincinnati. Covington Independent Public Schools students worked hand in hand with students from Covington Latin School, Notre Dame Academy, Badin High School in Cincinnati, as well as other volunteers from Ohio, Indiana, and other cities in Kentucky.
The next Trailblazing day is Saturday, May 9th. If you are interested in participating, please contact Larry Klein, Assistant City Manager, at (859) 292-2160 or lklein@covingtonky.gov.

| Mentoring Match of the Month |
|
Celebrating volunteers - one match at a time.
Chris Arlinghaus has been a Bulldog Connection mentor with David for more than three years. Even as a busy attorney and an active community member, Chris makes sure to contact David every week - in person, through email, or over the phone. Chris has encouraged and motivated David over the years. David describes Chris as "smileative" and says "My mentor is a good person. He listens. He's nice, talkative and cool to be around." Recently, Chris was honored by Covington Independent Public Schools' Department of Community Relations as Volunteer of the Month and recognized at a Board of Education meeting. We recognize Chris as "Mentoring Match of the Month" for doing his part to positively influence change in Covington through mentoring.
You can make a difference in the life of a youth!

| Parents and Teachers Talking Together |
|
Parents and teachers are sharing ideas about next steps. The district-wide Parent Partnership Advisory Council (PPAC) will meet on April 29th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Center for Great Neighborhoods to review the school district's scholastic audit and make recommendations about school culture. Our efforts to increase home-school communication and parent involvement opportunities were part of the family and community support segment of the audit, an area that achieved the audit's highest rating, a level 4! Of course, there's still more work to be done, and parents are doing their part, sharing ideas through Parents and Teachers Talking Together (PT3) and PPAC. School and community leaders are creating action plans for improvements for next year. They are reviewing PT3 participants' recommendations. This meeting is a chance for parents to have input into the decisions that will affect their children. All parents and guardians are invited to join the meeting on April 29. Please contact Shonda Bolling, Director of Family Engagement, at (859) 392-3188 or Shonda.bolling@covington.kyschools.us for more information.

| Project Sticker Shock |
|
Kenton County Alliance is planning their annual campaign to prevent underage drinking.
Bright orange stickers like these will be appearing on packages of beer and wine coolers in Kenton County stores during May and June, thanks to Kenton County Alliance's Project Sticker Shock. Anyone can help place stickers on boxes in stores that have already agreed to participate. Youth can volunteer to do their part if they are accompanied by an adult. In March, approximately 150 stores with liquor licenses received letters of support of the campaign from Garry Edmondson, Kenton County Attorney. This is a unique and simple way we can protect Covington youth from early access to alcohol. If you would like more information about how to participate, please contact Kathy Nafus at (859) 760-2051 or kathy.nafus@erlanger.kyschools.us. |
| Coalition Committee Connection |
|
Family Fitness Committee - Cafeteria staff did an amazing job during the first Covington Cafeteria Cooking Challenge. They competed with creativity, energy, and effort! The winning cafeteria team will be announced in the next week.
Due to the Annual Meeting, many committees did not meet in March. Look forward to their updates next month.
