Striving to meet the money goal The 3M Campaign (Money, Materials, and Mentors) by the Board of Directors is now a campaign of just 1M - Money. Dr. Angie Taylor, Board Chair, points out, "Together, we've made our mentoring goal, our materials goal and now upward and onward we strive to achieve our money goal!"
We have been exceptionally fortunate over the past ten years to have plentiful support from the federal and state level, but grant funding is not as accessible in this economy. Therefore, we need to work together to financially support Covington Partners in Prevention's programming that has proven to make a difference in the lives of Covington youth. The Tenth Annual Meeting will mark the beginning of a fundraising campaign, to run through August, with a goal to raise $150,000. What can you do to help?
- $5 will provide materials for a child or parent to work together to make a craft, building both skills and relationships for success.
- $25 will help a child experience a play, the zoo, or a sports event with a mentor.
- $50 will provide rewards to recognize families who are doing an outstanding job.
- $100 will help develop a young leader, perhaps the future mayor of Covington.
- $500 will support a family fitness activity to help change the way families view healthy, daily activity and the power of nutritious food.
- $1000 will support one mentoring pair for a year, including background checks, training and ongoing support for both the mentor and the student as they get to know each other.
Donations can be made online by clicking the DONATE NOW icon on the left menu.

| Parents Develop a Plan of Action |

Covington parents attend Parent Leadership Training Sandy Arnold, Reggie Bates, Shonda Bolling, April Brockhoff, Patty Creech, Michelle Hood-Salaah, Karen Johnson, and Veronica McDaniel, were 8 of the 30 parents across Northern Kentucky chosen from 60 applicants to attend the Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership (CIPL) training offered by The Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence.
As CIPL Fellows, they are required to develop and implement a three-year project to improve student achievement in Covington. Each One, Reach One, a district-wide project, will work with current Covington Partners in Prevention's efforts to recruit community and parent volunteers to mentor students in grades 4-11.
Their goal is to recruit 150 mentors over the next three years to be matched with students scoring below proficient in reading or math. Shonda Bolling, CIPL Fellow and Director of Family Engagement, says "There are a lot of efforts happening to ensure academic improvement. We realize it is a big job and we are here to do our part."

Calling All Parents - Our committee is developing a "call to action" information sheet for parents about the 40 Developmental Assets. This is part of a communication plan to empower more parents to intentionally build assets for Covington youth. We hope to have it finalized by May 2009.
Celebrating Families - We select one nominated family each month to recognize for their amazing contribution to their family, school and community. In March, all families recognized for the year will be celebrated at Covington Partners in Prevention's Annual Meeting and receive a free one year family pass to the Cincinnati Museum Center.
Faith-School Partnership - We implement Random Acts of Kindness, Family Strengthening programs, Urgent Needs List, and the annual Santa's Workshop at Two Rivers Middle School, Thomas Edison Elementary and John G. Carlisle Elementary. We hope to expand our services to all Covington schools by 2010.
Family Fitness - We are holding the Covington Cafeteria Challenge Cookoff at each public school. The challenge is for the cafeteria staff at each public school to design a nutricious and delicious breakfast and lunch menu. We want to light the spark of creativity in the nutrition department of Covington Independent Public Schools and to show appreciation to the women who feed our students everyday. We also want to highlight the value of nutrition for our children. We are in need of donations from spas, massage facilities, etc. as gifts for the winning team!! Contact Meredith Potter if you can help out at meredith.potter@covington.kyschools.us.
Mental Health Committee - Our committee is a referral source for community mental health needs. We help provide information about what agencies/services are available in the community. Covington Partners in Prevention members can fill out service request forms and give them to the Mental Health Committee, and we will provide a list of appropriate agencies, services or even individual contact people.
Why Aren't You in School Today? - Our main focus is truancy reduction. We organize social marketing campaigns in partnership with TBNK, TANK, and local businesses. Community members are encouraged to ask children out in the community during school hours, "Why Aren't You in School Today?" We also help provide positive rewards for attendance-related contests within the Covington Schools.
