Brooklyn, New York - BDPA New York announced Melodie Mayberry-Stewart, PhD, New York State Chief Information Officer and Director of the Office of Technology, will keynote the chapter's 2010 Scholarship and Awards Dinner.
Dr. Melodie Mayberry-Stewart was appointed to the position of New York State Chief Information Officer and Director of the Office of Technology, in May 2007, by former Governor Eliot Spitzer. As a member of the Governor's cabinet, Dr. Mayberry-Stewart develops,implements, and oversees IT investments for the State of New York, a $130 billion enterprise with over 190,000 employees serving a statewide population of 19 million. Her responsibilities also include promoting the use of technology to drive economic development to help build stronger economies, and ensuring information technology programs align with the objectives of the NYS Information Technology Enterprise Strategic Plan. Recently named one of the Top 50 African-Americans in IT by US Black Engineer and Information Technology magazine, Dr. Mayberry-Stewart will deliver an address incorporating the dinner's theme of, "Don't Be Afraid of the S.T.E.M.", [STEM being an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics].
The 2010 Scholarship and Awards Dinner, sponsored by National Grid, will be held on Wednesday, November 10, from 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm, at National Grid, One MetroTech Center, Brooklyn, NY. The purpose of the dinner is to recognize the outstanding contributions of BDPA New York's 2010 community supporters and corporate sponsors as well as award college scholarships to our students, who are members of BDPA's Student Information Technology Education Scholarship (S.I.T.E.S) program. These programs are designed to develop the next generation of IT Professionals, and encourage African American youths to explore careers in such traditionally underrepresented fields as Computer Science and Information Technology. BETF - The American Honda Foundation approved a $25,000 grant proposal this quarter submitted by the BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) for NBDPA's SITES Program. In an email received late last week paraphrased by R. Wayne Hicks, BETF's Executive Director, "...American Honda Foundation's Board of Directors has decided to partner with NBDPA in its efforts of making a difference in the lives of our youth. In fact, the SITES program ranked number one out of the top 15 finalists! Not to mention there were over 500 other proposals we had to review for consideration this quarter..." BDPA Oracle Scholarship Announcement
Largo, Maryland--National BDPA is now accepting applications for 2010 Oracle scholarships.
BDPA student members may submit applications to win one of ten (10) $5,000 Oracle Scholarships. College and high school seniors seeking an undergraduate degree in Engineering, Computer and Information Science, Computer Engineering or Mathematics are encouraged to apply.
The application deadline is 11:59 PM EST, Thursday November 25, 2010. Students will be notified by December 20, 2010 regarding the status of their applications. Oracle representatives will select each winner. The scholarship announcement is posted on the National BDPA website with a direct link to the scholarship details page.
