HSCC Training Facility | DC Courts
BDPA's local High School Computer Competition in the National Capital Region (NCR)  was successfully launched this past weekend at the D.C. Courts training facility. Last year, the Oracle Foundation donated $50,000 in 2009 to qualified BDPA student members. Francisco Nunez and TurKenya Herring are BDPA's Washington, D.C. Chapter 2009 Oracle Scholars. Each will be graduating seniors in 2010 and currently serve as the Region's HSCC team co-captains.

Annual dues for student memberships in BDPA are $25.00. Parents, teachers, and students may join or start local BDPA Chapters, participate in other available scholarship programs, apply for internships, and learn more about exciting STEM (Science.Technology.Engineering.Math) and related career opportunities in our region with active participation in the local chapter. Other career opportunities for BDPA Members at awards ceremonies or professional networking events are listed below.

HPCMP JEOM 2010 and Navy Games at BEYA 2010

(Left photo) The Defense Department's (DoD) High Performance Computing Modernization Program office (HPCMP) created the Joint Educational Opportunities for Minorities (JEOM) program for students from underrepresented groups, who are pursuing studies in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The goal of this program is two-fold: 1) ensure a competitive and diverse workforce within the DoD by offering training, mentorship, and career development for undergraduate students in STEM disciplines and 2) to provide opportunities for students who have an interest in computational science and high performance computing challenges important to DoD. Exhibiting this year with DoD during the BEYA STEM Expo in Baltimore this February were Ms. Pamela Gilliam (left [BDPA-DC]) and Ms. Deborah Schwartz (right). Ms. Gilliam and Ms. Schwartz support and manage HPCMP's Oversight & Outreach Program respectively, and strongly encourage BDPA Student Members and  qualified students to apply well before their  March 22, 2010 suspense date.  (Right photo) Area students visited one of many exhibits on display during the BEYA STEM Expo including video games, war games, robotics, and flight simulators (shown above provided by The Boeing Company.)

National Naval Officers Association | NNOA

The Washington, D.C. Chapter of the National Naval Officers Association (DCNNOA) is committed to improving its members, our youth, the community, and America's Sea Services--U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, and U.S. Coast Guard.  NNOA's DC Chapter works with numerous schools and associations such as BDPA-DC  in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area to provide role models to address job and career opportunities in the Sea Services and to enhance the education of local youth.

Each year, the Chapter awards scholarships to minority youth from the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area who have demonstrated academic achievement, financial need, and positive involvement in their community.  Scholarship recipients attend the college or university of their choice without any obligation to join or affiliate with the military, unless stipulated by the scholarship sponsor (i.e. NROTC) or indicated within the requirements form for a specific scholarship.

All scholarships will be awarded to a graduating minority senior from one of the high schools in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area that has demonstrated academic achievement, financial need, and positive involvement in their community.  This scholarship is designed to support the awardee during their freshman year of college.  The awardee will be notified on April 12, 2010.  The awardee is expected to attend a scholarship awards banquet in their honor on Saturday, April 24, 2010 starting at 6:00 p.m. at the Catering and Conference Center located on the Historic Washington Navy Yard in Southeast Washington, DC.

The purpose of the banquet is to introduce and honor both academic and community achievements of DCNNOA's 2010 scholarship recipients.  To claim the award, the awardee must enroll full-time at a two or four-year accredited college or university.  Verification of enrollment must be submitted to DCNNOA on or before August 31, 2010.
