Second Life Solving Real-World Healthcare Problems
Chicago's Children's Memorial Hospital uses the virtual world for disaster preparedness training, while disabled people turn to it for peer support.

today
--InformationWeek (IW) reports some healthcare providers are using the virtual world of Second Life to solve real-world healthcare problems--a perfect place where hardly anyone gets old or sick.

In Chicago, Children's Memorial Hospital uses Second Life, with its three-dimensional software representations of landscapes, buildings, and vehicles, for disaster preparedness training, to show employees how to evacuate patients in an emergency. Meanwhile, disabled people use Second Life for peer support, helping one another with the emotional, social, and other problems they encounter in the real world. In both cases, people in Second Life interact using avatars, software representations of themselves or a character of their choosing. Developed and operated by Linden Lab, the six-year-old service has about 650,000 active users, who turn to it for business, games, live music, and more. Select here to read more...

HIPAA

HIPAA is the United States Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. There are two sections to the Act. HIPAA Title I deals with protecting health insurance coverage for people who lose or change jobs. HIPAA Title II includes an administrative simplification section which deals with the standardization of healthcare-related information systems. In the information technology industries, this section is what most people mean when they refer to HIPAA. HIPAA establishes mandatory regulations that require extensive changes to the way that health providers conduct business.

HIPAA seeks to establish standardized mechanisms for electronic data interchange (EDI), security, and confidentiality of all healthcare-related data. The Act mandates: standardized formats for all patient health, administrative, and financial data; unique identifiers (ID numbers) for each healthcare entity, including individuals, employers, health plans and health care providers; and security mechanisms to ensure confidentiality and data integrity for any information that identifies an individual.

About BDPA-DC

NBDPA's Washington, D.C. Chapter was founded in 1978 by Norman Mays. It was incorporated in 1981 as a domestic not-for-profit corporation in the District of Columbia. In February of 1988, Black Data Processing Associates of Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area (BDPA-DC)  became an IRS Section 501(c)(3) Public Charity.  Today, BDPA-DC provides professional development services for its members and stakeholders in direct support  of local and regional STEM (Science. Technology. Engineering. Math) initiatives. Towards this end, BDPA-DC partners with BDPA Baltimore, BDPA Northern Virginia, and BDPA Richmond to support members and stakeholders within the National Capital Region (NCR) and the Baltimore-Richmond Corridor. BDPA-DC also serves NBDPA, BDPA Chapters and Chapter Interest Groups (CIGs) as a federal news bureau, government relations liaison, and bdpatoday newsletter clearinghouse for emerging  NBDPA Chapters.
