October 13th is celebrated as the official birthday of the U.S. Navy because it was on this date in 1775 the Continental Congress passed two resolutions authorizing the outfitting of a pair of 10-gun ships intended to intercept a British ammunition convoy headed to Quebec. Shown above, Captain George N. Thompson, commanding officer, leader of the United States Navy Band, concludes the Navy Band's performance of the 233rd Navy Birthday Concert at DAR Constitution Hall, last year. The Navy Band presents a concert celebrating the United States Navy's Birthday each year, which is hosted by the Chief of Naval Operations.

NROTC

College and high school students--you've got the grades, discipline and drive. And you know that college is the way to attain your goals of achievement, success and financial independence.

As a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) student, you will enjoy all the great college experiences your fellow non-NROTC students do. Like getting involved in extracurricular activities, fraternities, sororities and honor societies. Or participating in club and varsity sports, the varsity band and even University-sponsored work study programs. Live on campus, or off. Live with fellow NROTC students, or not. The choices are yours to make. The fantastic times are yours to enjoy.

The only real difference between life as an NROTC student and that of any other student? You will not have to repay hefty student loans. And you will have a technical job waiting for you upon graduation.

You've done your homework. Now do the math. A four-year degree from any top college or university is going to cost you. Here are a few examples of four-year tuition costs, plus room and board:
  • Plan on studying at Carnegie Mellon? One can expect to pay $198,020.*
  • Interested in Duke? That will ring up close to $180,484.*
  • Just been accepted to MIT? Congratulations! But that will cost you $192,800.* Easily.
That is the harsh reality. With a solid education comes a hefty price tag. Instead of taking out student loans and then spending a decade or more paying them back, you need a college scholarship that offers you up to $180,000 and a real shot at a life-accelerating career. An NROTC scholarship covers all this and more:
  • Full tuition
  • All college and university educational fees
  • Allowance for textbooks
  • Other related educational expenses
Your dreams. Your ambitions. Your determination. Put them all on the Navy's tab today.

About BDPA-DC

NBDPA's Washington, D.C. Chapter was founded in 1978 by Norman Mays. It was incorporated in 1981 as a domestic not-for-profit corporation in the District of Columbia. In February of 1988, Black Data Processing Associates of Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area (BDPA-DC)  became an IRS Section 501(c)(3) Public Charity.  Today, BDPA-DC provides professional development services for its members and stakeholders in direct support  of local and regional STEM (Science. Technology. Engineering. Math) initiatives. Towards this end, BDPA-DC partners with BDPA Baltimore, BDPA Northern Virginia, and BDPA Richmond to support members and stakeholders within the National Capital Region (NCR) and the Baltimore-Richmond Corridor. BDPA-DC also serves NBDPA, BDPA Chapters and Chapter Interest Groups (CIGs) as a federal news bureau, government relations liaison, and bdpatoday newsletter clearinghouse for emerging  NBDPA Chapters.
