Hej!

Greetings!

That is how to say hello in Swedish--a fitting greeting to invite you to join us at the Lincolnwood Library Ethnic Fest, 4000 West Pratt Avenue,  on Sunday, Nov 6, from 1-4pm, where we will be helping children create Scandinavian crafts. The library has a great event planned, including art activities, performances, and food.

Also watch for us at Waters Elementary School's Holiday Artisan Market, Saturday, December 3, 10 am - 3pm, where we will provide crafts and sell multicultural books to help raise money for scholarships.

If you're wondering about our annual fundraiser, which is usually held in November, it is being moved to February, when we'll feature a Carnival theme. Keep an eye out for future emails with further details.

Please read below for more information on activities and programs.

Happy explorations!

Kluth Family Foundation Funds Free Programs

adinkraGlobal Explorers Kids is grateful to the Kluth Family Foundation, in cooperation with Coupon Cabin, Inc, for an $8,000 grant to help provide free programs to children in low-income communities.

With this grant, Global Explorers Kids is bringing a free year-long program to preschoolers at All About Kids Learning Academy in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood. Each week, 34 children are creating projects from around the world, including Japanese Obon lanterns, Guatemalan trouble dolls, Tibetan prayer flags, and Turkish evil eyes. The program will run throughout the 2011/12 school year, "visiting" a different culture each week with hands-on arts activities.

Also funded through the grant is a family program at Volta Elementary School in Albany Park. Held in conjunction with their Family Focus/Nuestra Familia after school program, this program offers six family nights throughout the school year with each family night focusing on a different culture represented at Volta. Parent cultural ambassadors help plan and teach the activities. The first family night, held September 22, presented the Indian holiday of Diwali. Almost 150 students and family members  participated in four stations of activities, including tasting Indian food, creating a diya lamp, hearing the story of Rama and Sita, and learning to dance a garba.

Stay tuned for more information on grant funded activities.

Global Explorers Kids Scholarships

mask makingGlobal Explorers Kids individual donor campaign is providing scholarships to help children on the free-lunch program participate in Global Explorers Kids after school programs.  Four children at Waters Elementary School are receiving full scholarships to participate in the current after school session on Masks Around the World -- this is equal to $528 in scholarships. More scholarships will be available for future sessions.

The scholarship program ensures that all children are given the opportunity to learn about the cultures of the world and of their communities. If you'd like to help bring more free programming to children, please contribute to the Global Explorers Kids individual donor campaign.

Centro de Esperanza Infantil
A special thank you to the families that donated school supplies and books to our summer service project. You provided a suitcase full of paper, pencils, pens, markers, books, and other school supplies that we brought to Centro de Esperanza Infantil in Oaxaca, Mexico. The Center serves 600 of Oaxaca's poorest children, providing them with the support they need to attend and succeed in school. During our visit, we were able to meet some of the children and spent an afternoon playing games with them. The children and staff of Centro de Esperanzo Infantil were grateful for your donations.

After School
Global Explorers Kids is currently offering after school programs at Waters Elementary School and Blaine Elementary School. Students at both schools are exploring masks from around the world. Through hands-on activities, they are creating projects inspired by masks from various cultures, while learning the various ways that masks are used. So far, they have made Mexican ceramic sun masks, Greek theatre masks, Korean dance drama masks, and Yupik spirit masks. More projects are planned for the weeks ahead.
