Summer is just around the corner!

Greetings!

With summer just around the corner, we are gearing up for summer camp, but children are still enjoying our after school programs and special events. Read below for information about our upcoming programs and summer camps, and a report on our recent family field trip to sample Kyrgyz cuisine at Jibek Jolu.

Happy explorations!

Young fans of Kyrgyz cuisine  Kyrgyz dining

Thirteen children and their parents had their first taste of Kyrgyz cuisine on Saturday, April 17 during Global Explorers Kids' family field trip to Jibek Jolu restaurant in Lincoln Square.

Jibek Jolu arranged a family style meal for us, so everyone could experience a range of Kyrgyz foods. The meal included borsok (fried bread), samsy (lamb and potato pies), carrot salad, funcheza (noodle salad), plov (beef with rice), manty (steamed meat and pumpkin dumplings), vareniki (potato dumplings), lagman (lamb stew over noodles), and chicken kotlety.

After lunch, the families were treated to a special discussion about Kyrgyz culture and food by Munara Mailybekova. Munara played the children a song on the komuz, a stringed instrument that is the national instrument of Kyrgyzstan, and the temir ooz komuz, the mouth harp. Families were also treated to a demonstration of traditional Kyrgyz dance. Check out our Facebook page for more photos of the event - and become a fan while you're there!

Global Explorers Kids after school program is growing! Programs are currently being offered at Waters Elementary School, Nettelhorst Elementary School, and Oakwood Shores. Look for new programs in the fall at Blaine Elementary School and the Menomonee Club.

Children at Waters have started a new session on World Mythology. Students, grades K-4, are learning about flood myths from various cultures. The children will learn to perform two of the myths, Deucalion and Pyrrah, a flood myth from Ancient Greece, and Manu and the Flood, a flood myth from India. They will have a performance of Deucalion and Pyrrah during Waters School's International Day on Saturday, May 15.

Children at Nettelhorst are starting a session on masks from around the world. The children, grades K-3, are learning about and making masks from various cultures, including Mexico, Mali, Tibet, and the Caribbean.

Our newest program is in partnership with Oakwood Shores after school program. Oakwood Shores is a mixed income apartment complex in Bronzeville. They provide an after school program for their low-income residents. Global Explorers Kids is meeting with them once a week to help the students, grades K-8, participate in the Uthando Project. We are making dolls to send to the children of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, who are suffering from the effects of AIDS.
