A World Harvest: Global Explorers Kids Fall Fundraiserfundraiser invite

Join us on Friday, November 6, 6-9 pm for a global harvest celebration featuring an international menu created by chef Hugh Amano and supported by tastes of cuisine from local ethnic restaurants. This is our main fundraiser of the year and promises to be an exciting evening featuring food, fun, special musical guests, and a chance to take home some special prizes. This is a great chance to stock up on holiday gifts. Each guest receives one drink ticket and one raffle ticket, with opportunities to purchase more!

The event will take place at Belle Plaine Studio, 2014 W Belle Plaine. There is a suggested donation of $20 at the door. A separate children's party is offered during the evening (same space, different room), for $5. Proceeds will help support Global  Explorers Kids' special projects that allow Chicago children to collaborate with others across borders.

Uthando=Love

   doll making at Waters
 Uthando is the Zulu word for love. In this tuition-free service learning project 30 Waters School children, grades 3-6, are becoming doll makers by creating fabric dolls to be donated to the KwaZulu Natal children of South Africa. One in five KwaZulu Natal children have been orphaned due to HIV/AIDS and poverty. Many of these children do not have toys or dolls to play with. We would love to make a difference in the daily lives of some of these children by sending our dolls, made with our love, to them to play with.

Students are learning basic sewing and design skills while building global citizenship. They are studying and creating a variety of African textile arts, and exploring traditional songs and dance, cultural celebrations and folk tales.

This project is being sponsored by a Waters School grant from Chicago Arts Partnership in Education. Parent volunteers, Waters School teachers and teaching artist Patricia Okulinski-Reyes are collaborating with Global Explorers Kids on this project! The Waters School Parent Ensemble has volunteered to help us sew additional dolls to accompany the children's efforts. Thank you to everyone for all of your support!
