The Collect

Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, you know our necessities before we ask and our ignorance in asking: Have compassion on our weakness, and mercifully give us those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask; through the worthiness of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

Matthew 13:24-30,36-43

Jesus put before the crowd another parable: "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good seed in his field; but while everybody was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then went away. So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared as well. And the slaves of the householder came and said to him, `Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where, then, did these weeds come from?' He answered, `An enemy has done this.' The slaves said to him, `Then do you want us to go and gather them?' But he replied, `No; for in gathering the weeds you would uproot the wheat along with them. Let both of them grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Collect the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.'"

Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples approached him, saying, "Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field." He answered, "The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man; the field is the world, and the good seed are the children of the kingdom; the weeds are the children of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. Just as the weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all evildoers, and they will throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Let anyone with ears listen!"

The Parable of Tall Trees and Other Perplexities II

Yes!  Another parable on

"planting things" this week!!!

I confess that I am a news junkie - especially these days. Thirty odd years ago I never gave a thought to politics, world events and the whole gamut of human behavior. After, watching denominations and institutions fall for control freaks, the development of a "new and stricter interpretation" of the bible" and all the intellectual dishonesty that followed - I actually began to take notice ( and it took me years to understand what intellectual dishonesty actually was...).

I promise not to expound on all kinds of right or left wing political and religious nonsense...I don't believe in it anyway - we are either right brain or left brain - you cannot change how the human brain processes information - but you can recognize when someone is "duping" everyone.

I think that if there ever was a time when folks need to pay attention to certain aspects of the bible it is now - when you think about it - there is no place where we can get a "good dressing down" on our lousy behavior, intolerance, bigotry, hate, impatience and divisiveness.

"Jesus put before the crowd another parable: "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good seed in his field; but while everybody was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then went away."

Notes on the Offertory

Sospiri
, Op. 70, is an adago for string orchestra, harp and organ (or harmonium) composed by Edward Elgar  just before the beginning of World War I.

Elgar originally intended it for violin and piano, as a companion piece to Salut d'Amor and had in mind the title

Soupir d'Amour  (French for "Sigh of Love"). While composing it, however, he realized that he was writing something more intense, and so chose an Italian word, sospiri meaning "sighs".

The work, was first performed on the 15 th of August 1914 at Queen's Hall in London., conducted by Sir Henry Wood

Sospiri was dedicated to Elgar's long-time friend, the violinist W.H. Billy Reed.
