The Collect

O Lord, this day we humbly beseech Thy intervention upon the behalf of all peoples in the country of Haiti.  Inspire the entire world to come to their aid in this time of distress. May this be an historic opportunity for all humanity to come together on behalf of these suffering people. We know that You do not unleash  harm, disaster and death upon your creation, nor do you punish the innocent. This earth may shake and roll and the heavens pour out wind and rain but your love is above all.

You have equipped us with minds, strong bodies and the will to help others in time of catastrophe.  Teach us how to cease our barren selfish desires and seize every precious moment of life on this earth to spread kindness, compassion and love. Amen

Adult Sunday School Class

stmatts_cross
Come join our weekly Adult Inquiry Sunday School class.  We meet each Sunday morning at 9:30 AM in the Parish Hall. The class is growing and is a very interactive discussion of topics that concern our lives as the people of God.

The class is in the middle of a study about Islam.  This Sunday's  session we will discuss Muhammad as Prophet and Statesman.  Source is Dr. John Esposito, Georgetown University.

Vita brevis, Longa ars
(Life is Short, Art long - Hippocrates)

hymnal

"O God, whom saints and angels delight to worship in heaven:  Be ever present with your servants who seek through art and music to perfect the praises offered by your people on earth; grant to them even now glimpses of your beauty, and make them worthy at length to behold it unveiled for evermore; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen"

 Music For The Liturgy

The opening voluntary this week "Almighty God", is one of my favorite vocal solos by Greg Nelson and Phill McHugh and originally sung by Sandi Patty.  In fact we performed this choral arrangement with the Sanctuary Choir at FBC Dallas in our first choral concert at the Meyerson Symphony Center back in 1990 - before the organ was installed.  It absolutely makes my heart soar.

"Almighty God...
Who Filled the sky with radiant stars to glorify the night?
Who knows the path that leads up to the dwelling place of light?
Creator, Master, Holiness, sustainer of my soul.
He reigns in golden splendor:
Almighty God.
He is excellent in power, all creation speaks His majesty.
Jehovah, Father, Mighty King, Sustainer of my Soul."...

The Choral anthem was commissioned by Ron Shirey, Director of Music at TCU and University Christian Church in Fort Worth by Michael Bedford in 1983.  "Now To Praise the Name of Jesus" is one of my favorite elegant choral settings for organ and choir.

The closing Organ Imporvisation will just surprise us all - including me!
